ANTIQUE 18thC GEORGIAN SOLID SILVER EMBOSSED TEA CADDY, J NEWTON, LONDON c.1730
Antique 18th Century Georgian Solid Silver bottle shaped Tea Caddy, compressed oval form, the detachable domed cover has a vase shaped finial. The body is beautifully hand embossed with two foliate scrolled reserves between floral garlands. Family crest on each side. The piece has a peculiar sliding base. The piece bears the colloquially called "Duty dodgers" marks, whereby the silversmith would have declared the bases for hallmarking rather than the whole objects in order to evade some of the duty was payable by the maker according to the weight of the object - this practice were common in the early 18th Century. That's why this piece is unmarked on body and cover (as usual for this kind of objects), just the sliding base is Hallmarked English Silver (925 Standard), two rubbed marks and Maker's mark I.N (John Newton). It dates to around 1730.For more information about the rare Duty dodgers marks please follow this link.
