Antique Late 19th Century Russian Orthodox Icon

The Mother Of God of Smolensk

  • Age/School:The end of 18th Century.Russian South-West Slavonic, perhaps, Ukranian.
  • Medium: Hand pained with egg tempera onleaf of genuinesilver. Levkas (gesso) on wood panel.
  • Size:height 14 3/4 inches; width 12 1/2 inches[37 x 32 cm]; thickness of the panel 3/4 inch [1.75 cm]
  • Condition: Good and stable state of preservation typical for the antique Russian Icon. Two splines on the back side are missing. See photographs.
  • Iconography: The image represent one of the most famous type of Mother of God. The legend said that it to have come from Byzantium to Russia in the Smolensk Cathedral in 1101; later was taken to Moscow in 1308. The original and a copy were appealed to for the success during the historical Russia\'s battle against Napoleon near the village of Borodino in 1812.
  • Important provenance: This icon is from the Estate of the Duchess of Caylus, Ludmila Progery ( the dynasty of the Duke of Caylus, d 1679) The Duchess was the niece of the Russian artist Alexandre Yevgenyevich Iacovleff (Russian-French, 1887-1938). Good friends andneighborsof the Duchess home in Tuxedo, New York, The Callvery family, were a Distant relatives of Abraham Lincoln.
