ANTIQUE 19thC CONTINENTAL SOLID SILVER CAST BOAR HUNTING STIRRUP CUP c.1890

Description

Antique early 20th Century rare Solid Silver Continental large and heavy boar-headed stirrup cup, the body finely hand engraved with scenes from a boar hunt in a forest, the top realistically cast as a boar\'s head and paws, extremely high quality of the workmanship.Stirrup cups were originally used for making toasts at hunts and areso called for the practise ofhaving one final drink \"for the road\" when one foot was already in the stirrup, this is made in the style of the early 17th-18th Century examples.The cup also stands upright when rested on the paws and nose of the boar.Hallmarked with Key mark unknown to me, a bearing a Maker\'s mark \"AM\" conjoined, the piece is probably German Hanau, and dates to year 1890\'s. Acid tested shows a 900+ silver purity.
