Description
Antique 19th Century Irish large and magnificent Solid Silver "Armada" pattern claret jug / ewer, with faux Ivory insulated scroll handle, the hinged lid has a nice cast scroll finial and opens squeezing the handle trigger. The piece is baluster form, has a domed circular foot and is profusely decorated in relief with embossed flowers, foliage and scrolls on a matted ground. The body also features two vacant cartouches flanked by cast winged mermaid and mermen, cast leopard at belly front. The quality of the workmanship is outstanding, and the decoration is incredibly crisp, richly parcel gilt. The piece is Hallmarked Irish Silver (925 Standard), Dublin, year 1863 (s), Maker's mark J.S (John Smith or Smyth).
