L P MARYOTT 1851
An extremely rare original naive school oil painting of a whaling scene from the mid 19th Century. Unframed and measuring 16 x 14 inches. Indistinctly signed L P Maryott (possibly L P Marnott) 1851 bottom right. Has had some restoration/repairs and has age discolouration to the main body varnish leaving spotting and frame marks around the edges which will disappear on reframing (please see images for condition issues) but this is part of this wonderful paintings long history and I personally would leave it as it is rather than attempt to remove the old varnish which gives the painting a ghostly purpley-green hue.
The image of the whale and the sailors in the two boats, one of which has been broken up with sailors in the sea amidst the turbulent waves is very well-executed.
This is a very rare item but I am starting low and will let it find its price here on . Good Luck If offerding!
