Description

Antique late 18th / early 19th Century Georgian Gold mountedtoothpick box, of navette form, the inside still has its original green velvet lining and the cover is set with a mirror, the cover is set with a stunning hand-painted potrait miniature depicting a lady, most probably the great actress Sarah Siddons (1755-1831), mounted in a pearl-set gold frame and protected by glass.

The present portrait, featuring a charateristic profile, shows a lady in a white dress with white ruffle cuffs, powdered hair with a white handkerchief. The peculiar profile, the hair-style, the white handkerchief are typical of the great actress, often portraited dressed this way (please follow this link, this link, this linkand this linkfor some examples).

Sarah Siddons was a legendary tragic actress and celebrity, dominating the London stage from 1782 to her farewell in 1812. Her brothers were the actors Philip and Charles Kemble and her husband was the actor Henry Siddons (for more information please follow this link).

This particular piece is particularly large and features an exceptional quality, it dates to around 1800\'s.
