ANTIQUE AFRICAN AMERICAN ALABAMA QUILT folk art 1860\'s Handmade:
$250.00

I believe this quilt to be from the 1860\'s. The colors are correct with that period.  The fabrics are correct for the period.  The threads used in the quilt were used to match the fabric colors showing on the front of the quilt.

This quilt was acquired from an antique sale in Selma, Alabama where the contents of an old drugstore were being sold. The sale included an antique spool cabinet that was being used as a file cabinet for drug labels.

The colors on the front of this quilt are deep, vibrant shades of red, green, A golden yellow, and white.  The squares are approximately 17.5\" square with slight variations throughout.  The stitches are painstakingly beautiful and in line with a woman who took great pride in her work -- that being uniform in size and small.  The backing is neutral in color.

The overall size is 67\"x84\". While the front of the quilt is in exceptional shape with very little fading, the back does have some discoloration issues that you can clearly see in the photos.

The pattern appears to be some variation of a star quilt and maybe a Seven Sisters?  I could not find a quilt with this same pattern.

I am not a quilt collector, except for the ones that were my grandmothers.  She was a many time blue ribbon winner for her quilts at the Alabama State Fair about 50 years ago and beyond.  I grew up watching her quilt and appreciate this form of folk art (which was certainly a necessity at the time they were made). These women worked individually and in little quilting circles where they got together and quilted .. And kept up with the community news of the day.  Of course, most of the quilting took place in the heat of the day. Their gardening, food preparation, storage, and laundry were all done early in the morning and in the late afternoons.  (I apologize for taking that little trip down memory lane.)

I would love to sit down with the maker of this quilt and hear her story.

Selma, Alabama has a history of its own and is rich in African American history.  The famous Gee\'s Bend area is a little south of Selma, but is in the same area of the state.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this beautiful work of art.
