THE CARVING IS OF EXTREMELY EXQUISITE AND FINE QUALITYAND IS DENSELY AND DEEPLY CARVED DEPICTING INTRICATELYCARVED FLOWERS AND LEAVES AND IS TO A DEPTH OF 10mm
CIRCA 1850 - 1875A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF A BOX OF SOME 168 - 143 YEARS OLDTHE BOX IS CARVED ON TOP AND ALL FOUR SIDESTHE CARVING TO THE LID IS ESPECIALLY FINE AND EXQUISITE
THERE ARE CARVED RADIUSED EDGES DEPICTING BAMBOO
THE INSIDE OF THE LID IS CARVED WITH WHAT WE BELIEVE ARE FIG LEAVES AND \'BERRIES\'
THE COMPARTMENTALISED LIFT-OUT TRAY IS NEWLY MADE AND LINED IN TERRACOTTA PASTEL PAPERSIMPLY TO ENHANCE THE USE OF THE BOX AND FOR THE CONVENIENCE OF THE USER
FOR THE PURISTS, HOWEVER, THE BOX CAN BE USED WITH JUST ITS ORGINAL REMOVABLE DIVIDERS
These boxes were made in South India in the area of Mysore and Canara.The work was executed by craftsmen who were famous for their temple carvings which were considered as the very finest of its type. The decoration on these boxes is deeply rooted in Indian tradition.Many examples were exhibited in the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace
