Selling here is a very attractive antique papier mache letter box from Kashmir, India. This box is beautifully handpainted with flowers in low relief, the flowers interspersed with vines and tendrils in applied gilt. The pigments used are natural, the blue derived from lapiz lazuli, the red typical of cochineal colouration. The domed lid opens to reveal a lacquered interior divided into three sections. The original lock and hinges remain.A genuine and very decorative object from 19th century Colonial India, for sale at .Length: 24.5cm
