Antique Arts & Crafts Kalo Chicago Sterling Silver Napkin Ring Hammered Letter R For Sale
ANTIQUE Arts & Crafts KALO Chicago STERLING Silver NAPKIN RING Hammered Letter R
VERY RARE PIECE 28.3 g ~ Low Starting offer ~ !
For your consideration....A lovely, rare antique hand wrought Sterling Silver napkin ring made by Kalo of Chicago. It is marked "Hand Wrought Sterling Kalo". The napkin ring is lightly hammered with an applied initial "R". It measures 3 1/8" long, 3/4" deep, and 5/8" tall, or wide.It weighs 28.3 grams. It is in excellent condition, perhaps only needing a little cleaning or polishing which I will leave to the winner. Here's some background on the maker, Kalo:
The Kalo Shop was founded in 1900 in Chicago by 32-year old Clara P. Barck. From a January, 1901 article in the Chicago Daily Tribune:
"The Kalo company is the latest group to be formed. It is composed of six young women, Bertha Hall, Rose Dolese, Grace Gerow, Clara P. Barck, Ruth Raymond, and Bessie McNeal, and their company name is taken from a Greek word meaning "to make beautiful."
In 1905, Barck married George Welles, a coal merchant and amateur silversmith. When Clara and George divorced in 1914 and the Shop moved to Chicago, George convinced her to focus exclusively on the handwrought copper and silver items for which it is best known. In 1912 Kalo opened a branch store in New York that lasted only until 1916 because of war constraints.
In many respects the Kalo Shop was the single most important American handwrought silversmith. Talented individuals such as Frank Gardner Hale and Edward Oakes were also key Arts & Crafts metalcrafters, and two other large firms -- Arthur Stone and Georg Jensen -- were in the very top tier of makers, but the Kalo Shop produced the widest range of classic handmade holloware, jewelry, and flatware for nearly 70 years, and was a critical influence in the Arts & Crafts movement.
