DETAILED CARVING LOVE BIRDS & CROSSED ARROWS LOVE TOKEN

Description:

A very finely carved example of a Coquilla Nut Snuff Box, French in origin and dating to theearly 19th Century, circa 1810-20.

The egg shaped nut has been painstakingly carved with extraordinary detail as a love token showing a pair of love birds, a pair of crossed arrows/ quivers held within a neatly tied knot. The remainder of the scene is carved with leaves and flowers. The underside is carved with acanthus leaf edging around a diamond shaped base, outlined with scrolling foliate detail.

The beautifully aged surface has an attractive smooth dark caramel brown patina.

The Coquilla nut is the fruit of the Brazilian Palm tree, and its hard shell lends itself very well to the carving of fine detail.

Condition:

The box is in good condition, showing age related wear. The lid does not close quite properly, and the hinge has a small split but is holding firm (please see the gallery images 5, 6, & 7). Please see the images provided which complementthis description.
