ANTIQUE AUSTRIAN FRANZ BERGMAN (?) COLD PAINTEDMINIATURE SCULPTURE OFAN ARAB BOY PUPIL

A very interesting miniature Orientalist sculpture. The figurine is tiny and mounted via a pin on its underside to its originalglass plinth which hascanted edges. The style and shape conforms to known cold painted bronze examples by the Bergman Foundry, of pupils learning the Koran (most particularly the figure known as the \"Writing Boy\"). However, this item is very unusual as it is in a much reduced size.

It appears to be made of lead or spelter, rather than bronze, but has been decorated in exactly the same polychrome fashion as the larger cold painted bronze examples by Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861–1936) and it is definitely old and has a good patina etc.I would suggest a date of the 1920\'s. It is apparently unsigned.

Manufacture and Date: Viennese, Circa 1920

Size: Miniature - the figure sits at 25 mm (1 inch) tall. The whole sculpture (including the glass plinth) measures just 5.8 cm (2 1/4 inches).

Condition: Usual patina, wear and paint losses to the figure. There is a flaw to one of the corners of the glass plinth though it has not chipped and there is a miniscule chip to another corner. (Please see photos of an accurate record of the condition).
