Since I first listed this I have had a number of people tell me this is a portrait bust of George I to George III of England ... well I dont know who it is.. it could well be an English Monarch but easy be a European one as well. ...you decide...it is an item of quality and debate.

WOW WOW WOW .... I really love this antique porcelain desk inkwell... it is large as well as gives off a real statement of grandeur and support of the KING .. not sure which one but I am sure some of you royalty collectors will instantly know.

It looks French to me... and one of the Louis \'s ...very Georgian looking with a wig type hair. it is really well modelled and fine hand painted too.

You will see ..looking from the top it has some fine firing cracks .. these run around the opening where you fill the inkwell.. these I would say have been formed when the inner porcelain part has been put in.. this is probably a seperate item pushed into the porcelain before being fired.. and where it has dried out it has created the cracks.. be assured these are NOT damage cracks.. its NOT cracked. ...they have been there since it was made.

At the back it has the INK WELL HOLE and the main hole at the top for filling the inkwell....... when blowing here ..you feel the air coming out of the bottom hole.

Recently ...it was said by someone not to be an ink at all but infact a candlestick.....this is " bunkum "...next they would be suggesting a lamp.... may I re-assure you this is NOT a candlestick ....it is a very well to do grand estate or even a Royal Palace or Government building desk ink... the Bust faces forward.. the inkwell at the back... I have put this to the test... I filled the top reservoir with water...it goes into the head and finally starts to come out of the hole at the back...you KNOW its full then.

The top hole.... MAY have either been used dual purpose to put the feather quills in or whatever you liked ...or it may have in fact held another porcelain item known as a POUNCE ..to hold a talcum powder like dust... you spread it on the ink after you wrote your letter so it did not smudge etc...early sort of blotter.....so this could have held a pounce pot or any number of other pots ...I have seen seperate ink well covered in here as well...and the hole at the back for the quill pen....think on here though the head top is NOT flat.. its at a slight angle.

Looking at the various private websites on google relating inkwells.. you will see ALOT with a large hole at the top and smaller one at the bottom..this is not uncommon....may I just say here....when I filled the top reservoir up with water.. of course when the lower ink well is full it OVERFLOWS ..the top reservoir at this point has NEVER got any liquid in it....it is there just to fill the inkwell below and possibly once had another pot in here for the pounce powder or other desk items such as seals, seal eraser tool, quill cutter of the period etc etc..

It has no makers marks as far as I can see.. It looks European to me but could be English .. it could be a King or a Famous person in their own right from the Georgian - Victorian era.

It is 5 and half inch tall x 3 and half inch base dia , the inkwell top is 1 and half inch dia.....it weighs approx...798grams.

Please see close up pictures for more detail.

Theitem(s) areshown next to an English 1 penny which is 20mm dia for scale.

Conversion ... approx... 2.5cm = 25mm =1 inch
