ANTIQUE GEORGIAN NAPOLEONIC PRISONER OF WAR CARVED SNUFF SHOE BOX c1810:

A small mahogany snuff box in the form of a shoecarved by a Napoleonic prisoner of war circa 1810. It was common practice forprisoners to craft items from bone and wood to sell at the gates of the prisonto earn a little money. This box is similar to those referenced in The Arts& Crafts of Napoleonic Prisoners of War by Clive Lloyd. The detailed carving is very fine with exquisite detail, some of the prisoners had previously been experienced carvers from Dieppe, France so the quality of their work was quite superb. The shoemeasures 4.5 inches long and is in good condition with great patina andcolour, the heel has a tiny chip and the hinge has had a repair at some point as shown.
