For salethisrare antique Georgian / EarlyVictorianOldSheffield Close Silver Plated Knife & Fork with Fine Carved Mother-of-Pearl Handles -c1789-1828 -(OSP - CP) -One Knife& One Fork with matching carved handles and collars.

Super Georgianperiod quality designed knife and fork. The blade and forkis madeusing the old Sheffield Close Plate method (CP) with fine carved reeded Mother-of-Pearl handles fitted with embossed white metal collars.

I am not sure of the actual silversmith possibly Samuel Roberts & Robert Smith or one of the many Smith & Co. combinations who wereusing the close plate method between 1789 and 1828 or thereabouts. Please see close-up photo.

Close Plate- Old Sheffield Silver Plating method called \"Close Plate\" and it was the only way to silver plate steel. Steel blades were dipped in sal-ammoniac and tin before a sheet of sterling silver was solder-ironed onto steel. In about 1784 -89 Samuel Roberts took out a patent on the method of close-plating cutlery.

Theknife and fork arein general good-fair antique condition , commensurate with materials , great age and use :-

Silver Plate-There is someconsiderable antique surface wear , no plate rub.Leading edgenicks andmarks oxidation typical of old close-plate items, although for their great age I would class theknife and fork as above average close plate cutlery of the Georgian period.

The Fine Carved Mother-of-Pearl Handles - in very good condition ,clean and bright and free from damage.

White Metal collars -the collars are in very good condition - firm fitting with no looseness.
