FANTASTIC, ORIGINAL HAND WRITTEN DIARY FROM RENSSELAER COUNTY AND ALBANY COUNTY, NEW YORK. HISTORY AND GENEALOGY, 1859. Historically important handwritten journal was the property of Minnie L. Alden, a 17 year old girl who was studying at a boarding school in the Albany, Troy, area of New York State, just a few years before the Civil War in America broke out. We would presume the school she attended was the Lansingburgh Academy in Troy, as at one point in her diary she writes \"we expect to leave soon for Lansingburgh with father.\" Away at school Minnie is studying Music, Botany, Latin, History, Philosophy and French. Her brother Dallas writes to her often, as does her special fella \"Frank.\" She hides her correspondence from her family as it seems Frank is a bit older; 26 or 27. When many of the other girls go home periodically for vacation or Christmas, Minnie remains at school and gets quite lonely. At one point she is sewing a collar for her sister, and she writes; \"Addie & Louise went home this evening. Last night i finished a linen collar for my sister Lucy, with blue ribbon in it. I\'m going to send it tomorrow. she is to be married next Wednesday at noon.\" However Minnie is not able to go to her sister\'s wedding and must stay at school. In the back pocket of the diary are the calling cards of Mrs. J. A. Connick, and Hattie W. Wadhams, together with an advertisement to take the Steamer Metamora to several places, and a couple of newspaper cut-outs referring to \"love.\"\"Feb. 21; I recited my Latin this morning. I did not receive any letters from home and I was very disappointed. Feb. 27; Went to church this morning and heard a Temperance Lecture from Mr. Crampton about wine. Then in the evening Mr. Beverage preached. I wish I could go home. Feb. 24; Friends and I took the night stage to Albany and the driver crossed over the railroad tracks about 80 seconds before the railroad cars passed. A very narrow escape! March 2; Frank (her brother), mother, and Dall have been over to Vermont and saw Maddie Bottman. March 7; This morning I had to change my room and I am now with Miss Eddy and Lucy is on this hall. I cried like a baby. Oh I wish I could go home and see my family. March 10; I wonder where I will be one year from now. Perhaps not in this world. March 14; I have a new room mate, her name is Julia Howe. I also received a Dear Good Letter from my friend. He does write splendid letters. March 15; We are going to commence Botany tomorrow morning. I saw a total eclipse of the moon. May 24; 1859, Today is brother Dallas birthday and I believe he is 16 years old today. August 6; Today Dr. Stevens came. I am very sick. August 31; I am 17 years old today and I rode on horse back. While at home in August she and friends travel to Fort Henry, Crown Point, The White Mountain State Forest in New Hampshire, where she sees rattlesnakes and the next day is very sick. Dec. 22 & 23; The girls are going home and I am not. Dec. 24; I am all alone. Dec. 27; A year ago Eddie Thompson was married. I received a letter from Frank & George (her brothers) and Mr. DeLano\'s house burned. Bad! Dec. 31; We took a fine double sleigh and all went up to the Dudley Observatory (Schenectady, New York). We spent the evening at Uncles,\" etc.She mentions numerous friends, family, teachers, etc. to include: Frank Hall, Amelia, Miss Bowman, Miss Connolly the music teacher, Uncle Edgar, Linny, Frank, Dall, Mariah Shranks, Dr Burton (Benton0, George Davenport, Miss Bigelow, Mr. Sayer, Dr. Stevens, Mrs. Macks, George Weeks, Addie, Louise, Mr. Redfield, Mr. Derya, Mr. Gates, Miss Slater, Mr. Mills, Dell Carter, George Leman, etc.Condition: Black, leather bound diary with \"Diary, 1859\" in gilt on front flap, gilt edges all around, is in good to very good condition, with entries on almost all the pages for the year 1859.
