EXTRAORDINARY, ORIGINAL MID-19TH CENTURY TAVERN LEDGER FROM SARATOGA COUNTY, NEW YORK.Historically significant early volume dates from 1841-1846 and was kept by the Flynn family of Halfmoon, New York. The patriarch of the Flynn clan was John Flynn (1727-1817), one of the earliest settlers in the area who opened the tavern in Halfmoon prior to the Revolutionary War. After the conflict ended, he relocated his tavern back to Halfmoon and by the late 1780s there were a number of public house license holders in the town along with John Flynn, who kept his tavern on the banks of the Hudson River (see A Descriptive and Biographical Record of Saratoga County, New York, 1899, p. 91). (Scroll down for more pictures.)

Handwritten volume chronicles the daily activities of one of the region\'s earliest taverns. The establishment originally founded by John Flynn in the 18th century continued to flourish long after his passing, with numerous members of the Flynn family mentioned throughout the present volume including Samuel, David, Jno [aka John], William, George, and Anthony Flynn. Entries here are almost exclusively related to tavern transactions including jugs, decanters, tumblers, drinks of brandy, rum, whiskey, and cider, half pints of whiskey and rum, pints of wine, gin, whiskey, rum, and brandy, quarts of rum and whiskey, gallons of rum and whiskey, etc.
Tavern\'s location along the Hudson River is also in evidence, as numerous boats are mentioned by name including the Texas, Boston, Capital, Empire, General, Shoreham, Brandywine, Canton, Oceala, etc. Not surprisingly, the favored commodity among the many riverboats docking at Flynn\'s tavern was liquor in various forms and serving sizes. As was customary for the period, the tavern also sold various commodities to compliment liquor sales including cigars, snuff, Tobacco paper and pipes, lemons, tea, crackers, pecks of potatoes, etc. A truly incredible surviving artifact of an early tavern on the banks of the Hudson River.
Halfmoonis located in the southeast part Saratoga County, New York, north of Albany. According to recent census figures, the town\'s population stands at about 21,535. The town is named for the Dutch ship Halve Maen (Half Moon in English) which sailed the Hudson River and Mohawk River. Halfmoon\'s history is closely intertwined with the neighboring towns of Waterford and Clifton Park. The earliest settlements in this area occurred around 1680 near the Mohawk River. The original town of Halfmoon was formed in 1788 while still part of Albany County. The name was briefly changed to “Orange” when the town of Waterford was created in 1816 from part of Halfmoon, however the current name was restored in 1820. In 1828, the western portion of the town was used to create the town of Clifton Park. The Erie Canal was built along the south portion of Halfmoon, part of the Mohawk River. Along with the town of Halfmoon, Saratoga County today also comprises the cities of Saratoga Springs and Mechanicville; the towns of Ballston, Charlton, Clifton Park, Corinth, Day, Edinburg, Galway, Greenfield, Hadley, Malta, Milton, Moreau, Northumberland, Providence, Saratoga, Stillwater, Waterford, and Wilton; the villages of Ballston Spa, Round Lake, Schuylerville, South Glens Falls, and Victory; the census-designated places of Country Knolls, Hadley, and North Ballston Spa; and the hamlets of bloodville, Burnt Hills, Crescent, Gansevoort, Jonesville, Porter Corners, Quaker Springs, Rexford, Rock City Falls, Vischer Ferry, and West Milton.Condition:Rare book remains in good overall condition only (see pictures). Volume bound in original leather-backed marbled boards with matching leather tips; mild toning, scattered staining and ink smudging, a few scattered tears, etc. Generally clean internally with ink bold and legible throughout. Ledger contains about 100 pp. of manuscript entries the majority of which are tavern related; and measures approx 12.5\" tall x 8\" wide x .75\" thick. Quite a find and a very worthy acquisition indeed.
