Japanese Imari Black Ship Bowl

Underglaze blue [sometsuke] decoration with polychrome enamels. Black ship, Nanban, Portuguese traders, Three Friends of Winter and chrysanthemum motifs. Scalloped rim. 4-character Fuki Choshun mark, meaning Good Fortune and Long Life. The Fukagawa kilns made many similar Black Ship pieces, though this one is not marked as such.

Edo to Meiji -- Mid- to Late 19th Century.

10inches in diameter and about 4 inches in depth.

A clean discreet hairline, a few inches long, that I only found by turning up the contrast while editing photos. It shows on the outside. I couldn\'t find the line at the gold rim. A discreet chip to the inside of the foot rim from manufacture. It is under the glaze. See last two photos. No other chips, cracks or other damage or repairs.
