WONDERFUL
ITALIAN GRAND TOUR BRONZE OF NIKE OR WINGED GODDESS OF VICTORY, BY SABATINO ET FILS
, NAPLES, 19TH CENTURY,NAPLES, LAST QUARTER 19TH CENTURY.
Highly detailed with a drak green patina and jeweled armband.InscribedSabatino et Fils, on a marmo portoro sphere and variegated marble plinth, believed to be designed by artist Louis-Ernest Barrias.
This bronze figure of \"Victory\" has one foot balanced on the sphere raised on the base and one arm reaching forward that has been lost trying to save a child, according to the Greek myth.
An interesting round hook is on her back as if she was designed to hang, similar to statues found on ships.
Statue is approximately 29 inches tall from base to top of wing with a 18 ¾ inch wing spread.She weighs a heavy 23 pounds.
There are 5 variations of this statue, the armband is often said to have been added later, but all variations in my research have the same arm band.
The inside is oxidized. I have never cleaned her.
