ANTIQUE NAVAJO RUG Native American Rare Old Saddle Blanket 1890 Ganado Weaving:

A SUPER FINE ANTIQUE NAVAJO RUG from our private collection. It\'s a beautiful antique, the kind of thing you want to show off in your home. This hails from Arizona, and it\'s a classic. As far as antique Navajo rugs go, this one is in as good a condition as I\'ve seen. With all salvege in tact, and dark chocolate brown single border. This one is a primo example of a classic Navajo rug saddle blanket. It\'s got everything going for it. It\'s large size is quite versatile, it\'s a fancy double saddle blanket (a bit longer than your standard saddle blanket, more hours required to weave this). Measuring 56 inches long by 32 inches wide. And that\'s not including the 4 wood tassels, which are mostly present (2 long tassels, one worn tassel, one corner is missing tassel). Fortunately this rug was kept for years in a hope chest, and rarely walked on. Before that, it was most likely purchased at the Hubble Trading Post established in Ganado by Don Lorenzo Hubbell. This has natural cream wool, which is a beautiful rich golden cream that comes with time. The darkest color you see is dark chocolate brown (it looks black in some photos), it makes up the single border as well as alternating stripes on the ends. This particular piece is in traditional double saddle blanket rectangular shape. The saddle blankets were among the first blankets the tribe made, along with Chief\'s blankets. They made them for themselves, even before the rug traders in Arizona started to influence the weavers. All natural churro sheep\'s wool. The center has 2 big stars with arrows crossing through them, very handsome design. Each corner has its own design, so that when the saddle sat in the middle, a fancy Sunday saddle, you could still see the designs on the four corners of the blanket. The corners fancey black & white 4 section designs. I love the super fine and tight weave, this is for sure from the hand of an experienced weaver. The Spanish introduced the churro sheep to the Navajo, and this improved the quality of their weavings. The rug is in excellent shape for its age, more than100 years old, circa 1890. All of the selvage on the edge is in tact! See the close up photos to see the amazing condition of this antique. The weave is tight, and there are no missing sections, it\'s completely in tact. This was probably only used for ceremonial pow wows, then kept locked away, I say that because it is very clean for a rug of its age. You can see the few small holes in the photos, but other than those, no tears, bleed, or major stains - this is in darn good condition for its age! Which of course makes it more valuable to collectors because it lays flay and can be displayed as is. This single border saddle blanket was among the first wave of blanket that Hubbell influenced, we are just starting to see a single border in this piece (later pieces would have as many as 3 borders). An old Western collector\'s item, a part of American history. .I love this one because the background is this lovely light golden cream color, which adds a bit of light to a room. This would be beautiful hung like a painting above a couch or love seat. Beautiful muted desert hues, something that will put your soul at peace every time you see it. Something about this is just priceless. Really a very nice traditional piece. When you open it and unfold it, and see this is an authentic antique, it is super impressive when you stop to think how many countless hours it took a Navajo weaver to make a piece like this by hand.Don\'t miss out on this, we are selling a few rugs from our collection this month and this is the only large sage Green Chinle rug that we have. It\'s a great old Navajo rug (circa 1920) and we hope you take care of it. These old Navajo rugs add warmth to any room and they last for eons. This is a heavy piece, weighs several pounds, it\'s a statement rug, a textile with decades of character. Highly collectible, this will always retain it\'s value, it\'s heirloom quality, a veritable treasure.
