From The EYE of KIEV: Available for purchase here is a rare canvas oil painting by Native American artist, Baida Whitebead (White Bead according to some sources). Although listed and sold by prestigious galleries and sale houses, there are few biographical details available about this artist. Research indicated she lived and painted in the first half of the 20th century, producing work at least from the 1930s. Most significantly, one of her oil paintingssold in June of 2004 at Sotheby’sfor a significant sum; that painting came from the personal estate of renown collector,Paul Peralta-Ramos, who owned “one of the world’s most impressive collections of Native American and Spanish colonial art”. By association, his respect and admiration for Whitebead’s work must impart value for the importance of her work.

This painting depicts three kachinas in ceremonial dance, rendered in powerfully bold monochrome and captivating naive style. I believe the spirits represented are the White Cloud kachina with Mudhead kachinas on either side. The painting is signed without date in the lower righthand corner. Research and clues date this artwork c. 1960.

This painting is in excellent condition. The canvas measures 12” x 16”, and has been framed in an appropriate stained black barnwood frame measuring 17” x 21”. The over all presentation is absolutely beautiful!

A very rare and striking painting by a highly respected Native American artist; and a perfect compliment to any Southwestern collection or decor!
