ANTIQUE PAIR OF CHINESE CARVED HUANGHUALI WOOD LAMPHANGER SIDE CHAIRS, DENGGUAYI:

Please see more photos below. There are a lot of photos, so please give them time to load.We are pleased to offer for sale a very fine pair of genuine Huanghuali Lamphanger Side Chairs. Each chair is carved with a stepped crest rail extending past the corner posts, above the gracefully curved splat and hard mat seat set within the rectangular frame. The front is decorated with beaded aprons and spandrels, and the sides and back with plain aprons and spandrels. The whole structure of each chair is supported on legs joined by stepped stretchers and the footrest. Metal mounts remain on the joints of the chairs.
Provenance:The chairs come to us from the collection of Steelcase Incorporated, where along with several other pieces of artwork, they formed part of the company\'s corporate art collection on display at their offices. Both chairs retain their catalog stickers from Steelcase. The chairs were originally acquired from a dealer in England, who is now unknown, but one chair retains a sticker from Lockson Fine Art Movers of Essex. We were also able to find a last name carved into one of the stretches of the chairs, it is very difficult to read as it is very worn.
Material:The chairs are made from genuine Huanghuali. Pleaseclickhereto see a comparable example. Looking at the splat and crest rail, one can tell that each chair was made from wood from the same tree - a beautiful thing.Age and Condition:The chairs are in very fine condition. There are signs of wear to the original finish indicative of authentic age consistent with comparable 17th to 18th century examples, including minor nicks and scratches, some water spots, and soiling to the hard mat seats. It\'s likely that the legs have been reduced by an inch or so, and that the mat seats have been replaced a few decades ago - fairly typical with furniture over 100 years old. Classical Late Ming to Yongzheng Period furniture was very popular in England during the first half of the twentieth century, and the English would usually shorten, repolish, and fix the old Chinese furniture so it could be used in their home. That said, the chairs are pristine, really a high quality example that is not usually seen outside of a major sale. They are a near identical match to a pair that sold at Christie\'s in September of 2014 for $161,000.
Measurements:The chairs each measure an approximate 42.75inches tall,20.5 inches wide, 16 inches deep.
Payment and Shipping:Additional images are available by request BEFORE the end of the sale, and can usually be provided within the same day.Standard international freight shipping is included for free for this item. This includes custom crating and packaging.Additional shipping options, such as freight forwarding or white glove service can be added upon request.
