Antique Glazed Earthenware Meditating Sakyamuni Buddha, Chiang Rai Province. 17/18th C.

Description: An exquisite and extremely rare 17th to 18th century Southeast Asian Glazed Earthenware sculpture of a Sakyamuni Buddha, stylistically and iconographically rendered in traditional Thai style, from a temple precinct in the Chiang Rai Province of northern Thailand. The figure is depicted seated in the attitude of meditation on an elevated plinth, intricately hand-modeled with an elegant stance and aesthetic alignment, and reflects early Pala influence of India. The image measures 6.75 inches (17.15cm) in height. XXX Seated in the \'Virasana\' posture, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The left hand rest palm-open in the lap, while the right hand forms the \'Bhumispara\' mudra, or Calling the Earth to Witness, gesture. Buddha is modestly dressed wearing a long monastic robe in the open mode, diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered, with the garment\'s end fold draped over his shoulder down to his mid-section. XXXHis gental face portrays a serene sense of calm, with an introspective gaze, an inherent quality found in Pala images, a stillness which gives the sculpture a feeling of spirituality. Ridge eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, eyes are almond-shaped, small mouth bow-shaped, cliffed chin, and elongated earlobes frame his face. The head is covered in small hair curls of graduated sizes, surmounted by a low \'Ushnisha\' and crowned with a bulbous ornament finial. XXX Thickly potted, light in weight, solid, the piece was hand-sculpted (not moulded) of hand-gathered earthen clay, first sun-dried and later fired in a low temperture kiln and decorated in overglazed brownish-maroon and earth colored skin tone. The glaze is evenly applied and lustrous, varying in color, with almost a translucent effect.

Data Observation: Excellent condition, small inconspicious repair to the base, kiln fracture, and minor surface degradation as would be expected for it\'s age and portability. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
