Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker

  • Age: 19th Century.
  • Medium:The riza is fullyHallmarked on the halo, on the background and on the vestment at the bottom. The hallmarks are: 84 ;1. I. Aand one more hallmark is not very clear, looks like a head in the profile. The silver icon is inserted in an old wood panel.
  • Technic:Repoussé,method of decorating metals in which parts of the design are raised inrelieffrom the back or the inside of the article by means of hammers and punches. Definition and detail added from the front bychasingor engraving.
  • Size:Framed height 4 1/4\" width 3 1/2\"[10.5 cm x 9 cm]; thickness of the panel 1 inch [2.5 cm]
  • Silver Riza size: 3 1/4 x 2 3/4 [8 cm x 6.5 cm]
    • Condition: Good and stable state of preservation typical for the antique 19th Century Russian Icon. See photographs.
    • Iconography: The icon represent one of the most famous saints:

    Saint Nicholasalso calledNikolaos of Myra, was a historic 4th-century ChristiansaintandGreekBishop ofMyra(Demre, part of modern-day Turkey)inLycia. Because of the manymiraclesattributed to hisintercession, he is also known asNikolaos the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model forSanta Claus, whose modern name comes from the DutchSinterklaas, itself from a series ofelisionsand corruptions of thetransliterationof \"Saint Nikolaos\". His reputation evolved among the faithful, as was common for early Christian saints.In 1087, part of therelics(about half of the bones) were furtivelytranslatedtoBari, inApulia, Italy; for this reason, he is also known asNikolaos of Bari. The remaining bones were taken toVenicein 1100. His feast day is 6 December.
