height=\"28px\" valign=\"middle\" face=\"arial\" style=\"text-decoration:none\" SACRED SOUTHEAST ASIA HINDU DEITY GANESHA GANESH TEMPLE SCULPTURE 19TH CDescription

An extremely rare and sacred Hindu Deity figure of Ganesha, from the Temple \'Wat Klang Bang Kaew\', located in the Nakhon Pathom province of north central Thailand, produced by one of the famed Buddhist monks \'Phra LP Boon, with monks blessing and inscription incised at the bottom.

This vivid depiction of Lord Ganesha was hand-made from \'Neua Wahn\' (herbals) a specific variety of 108 hand-gathered herbs, mixed with sacred powders, ground serge, and written sutra, incantated by holy \'Dhammakkhansha\' scriptures, and temple blessed and consecrated through ceremonial rite. These primary ingredience are then hand-pressed into a mould, combine with rice husk, sawdust, holy soil from beneath temple walls, and mixed with earthen clay, then dried under the sun or baked.

Luang Phor Boon is regarded as one of the top ten Gurus in Thailand, famous for his Wahn Herbal amulets and religious statuary. His process of creating statuary of this type is extremely tedious to make, and more so, the required collection of herbs are difficult to find. The deity is masterfully modeled in traditional Hindu style, depicted with his human body and elephant head, seated in a slightly relaxed posture on a circular base, with hands in mudra, while holding attributes in three of his four hands. The lower right hand is raised in gesture, with the palm of the hand facing outward, while the lower left hand holds a delicacy \'Modaka\', a bowl of sweets, which he samples with his trunk. He is shown unclothed above the waist, exposing his large pot belly practically falling over his garment, wearing an ankle-length garment, secured by a belt wrapped around his waist, heavily decorated in jewels.

Ganesha\'s well proportioned head is beautifully rendered with a slight downward tilt, almond shaped eyes, broken tusks, trunk carved in the round, whorled right, and large ears resting on his shoulders. He wears tightly matted braided hair, bound by an inter-connected \'Diadem\' crown, rising to an elaborate headdress, supporting a halo, and topped by a bulbous ornament.

The iconographic element of the rat \'Mushika\', is displayed at Ganesha\'s feet, his principle vehicle, and symbolizes that Ganesha, like the rat, penetrates even the most secret of places.
