ANTIQUE SIGNED RUSSIAN SILVER GILT AND ENAMEL CLOISONNE COMPACT 1820\'s - 1840\'s DescriptionUp for sale is this Rare Antique Russian Silver Gilt and Enamel Cloisonne hinged Compact. it has a wonderful enamel floral design.
This compact is in Excellent Condition.
Measurements are, 3 1/8\" wide, 2 1/4\" deep and 1/2\" tall. Weighs 116 grams.
Stamped on the inside gilted top lip is the Country hallmark, Makers Mark and 916. and on the inside guilted bottom it is scratched either, g28 or gg8 not sure as the middle number looks to have been corrected or changed.
The hinge is nice and tight, also in excellent condition.

\"The mark that contains the 916 Fineness designation to the right is actually the re-assay hallmark that was in use from 1927 - 1954. This means that this item was made prior to that period, but was re-assayed during the 2nd Qtr of 20thC, a typical practice for pre-Soviet era items around that time.
The Cyrillic ИЗС initials are the Latin equivalent of IZC. According to research, these initials seem to correspond to a documented but unknown craftsman or studio that specialized in gilt items. Although his name is not known, all items that were gilded by this craftsman date from early 19thC, more precisely from 1810s - 1830s. Some records indicate that he worked in St. Petersburg, the then seat of the Czars.
The stamp markis not clear,I cannot be sure but, I believe the outline is aSt. Petersburg town hallmark of the two crossed anchors and a vertical crowned scepter in the middle in use circa 1820s - 1840s.\"Please check out my Antique Russian Silver & Enamel bracelet I also have listed.
