Victorian Scottish Agate & Silver Bracelet....

Very attractive Scottish Agate panel bracelet set in hand engraved silver frames.

If you love agate like me you will appreciate the wonderful colours of this bracelet, including the gorgeous rich red Carnelians. The skill it took to make these panels is always a wonder to me - not only are they beautifully reeded but they are also curved to fit comfortably around the wrist.

This particular one is a bit of a find as it is quite large and most of these are really small. The last large one I had, a couple of years ago, sold in a few days of listing.

I love the chunky silver and agate padlock of this one, hand engraved with a florate design, it has a very sharp, needle-like point on the hasp - this was to enable it to go through the thick cuff material of Victorian dress. They would pass it through to ensure that the bracelet stayed put and did not swing about or get lost. At some point a safety chain has been added, so no need to make holes in your clothing.

In addition to the padlock there is also a matching agate heart charm - possibly added at a later date - very sweet!

Scottish Agate or Pebble Jewellery was made popular by QueenVictoria. When she travelled to the Highlands with Prince Albert she fell inlove with the dramatic landscape and went on to purchase Balmoral, the rest asthey say is history. This love extendedto all things Scottish and when the London papers reported that the couple werewearing “polished pebble brooches made from local stones” it set a trend thatwould last for decades and even spread to Europe.

Written examples of this sweeping fashion are to be seen in thenovel written by Elizabeth Gaskell in her novel Cranford (1851) set in theCheshire village of Knutsford where one of the characters – Miss Pole waswearing no less than 7 Scottish pebble brooches!

The size is: 8 1/2\" (21.9cm)

in circumference measured on the inside. The width 3/4\" (1.9cm)

It is in absolutely excellent condition.
