There watermarks on the images for listing purposes only. This protects us from internet piracy and is recommended by .Five days after the start of the Civil War at Fort Sumpter (April 12, 1861), the small township of Canandaigua in upstate New York called upon its citizens to unite with other countrymen to strike down “The Rebellion” in the south. We are offering a museum de-acquisition original broadside that echoes these words. This broadside was in storage for decades in the Rochester Historical Society Museum. It measures 13 1/2” by 9 3/4”. The bold block printing at the top reads “ Our Country Now & Ever!” The message calls on the citizens of Canandaigua and vicinity to meet at the Town House in Canandaigua on “Saturday Afternoon, the 20th Inst. at 2 o’clock.” The broadside is dated “April 17, 1861” at the bottom left corner and could have been printed earlier. This broadside has four major bulleted points:

1.) Sustain the Government of the United States. Defend our common country. Protect the honor of our national Flag.

2.) Government calls upon us for aid in this hour of trial; and patriotism, honor and duty demand that we respond to the call.

3.) The noblest, wisest and best government ever instituted by man, must not be struck down by Rebellion and the glorious memories of the Revolution effaced without a struggle which shall be worthy of our Revolutionary father.

4.) The time for action has come. The government calls. Let every man respond.

Notable town and county officials mentioned at the bottom of this broadside are: John A Granger, Henry O. Chesebro, William G. Lapham, Wiiliam H. Smith (spelling error? two “i”’s), William Hildreth.

This broadside has old fold lines and a few minor edge tears. There are museum markings on the back. This is an important piece of upstate New York Civil War Recruitment History.
