Artist\'s Biography:

Arthur Kolnik, French painter and printmaker. Born May, 4th, 1890, in Galicia (Stanislawow, Poland) his father originates from Lithauania, his mother from Vienna, Austria.

Artur Kolnik studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow. He worked in the studio of Prof. Joseph Mehoffer, receiving numerous prizes including a silver medal award.

Participates as a soldier (officer) in World War I, where he had an important meeting with the famous Austrian painter Isidor kaufmann. Kolnik becomes part of the circle of Jewish artists and writers including storyteller Eliezer Holtzstein, the poets Itzik Manger and Yacov Sternberg, the Novellisten Moshe Altmann, the essayists Shlomo Bickel and others.

In 1921, along with Reuven Rubin, he went to the US where they had a joint exhibition under the sponsorship of Prince Bibesco the Roumanian Minister. Kolnik returned to Czernowitz, where he made woodcuts and illustrations for books and is included in a number of exhibitions.

In 1931, together with Maximilian Rouble, he settled in Paris, France. He spent the 30\'s involved in illustrating a number of works of Jewish, Yiddish literature, as a caricaturist for newspapers and doing art deco and art nouveau illustrations for the fashion press.

In the war years, 1940-1944, he was interned with his family in a camp for stateless people. In 1945 he received his French citizenship. He continued his illustration work after the war in Paris.

Kolnik is accepted as a member of the \"Comité de l\'Association the Peintres et Sculpteures Juifs de France\" (group of the Jewish painters and sculptors in France). In 1968 the art museum of Tel Aviv (Israel) made an exhibition \"Peintures - dessins - Gravures sur Bois \" they show nearly 70 oil paintings, over 130 works in all.

Kolnik died in 1972.

As a printmaker and painter, Kolnik depicts the Ghetto dwellers of Eastern Europe. He presents them with sympathy and understanding, the human forms being very sharply outlined and his whole space freely divided into patterns of geometric planes.

Kolnik is notable for his tender and poetic paintings of traditional types and scenes recalled from the hasidic communities of his native Galaica. Crucial years of his artistic development were spent in the Eastern European culture metropolis of Czernowitz. Coming from the Jewish shtetl world of Eastern European Yiddish culture, he survived the disaster of the Shoa, the Nazi holocaust of world war II, by a miracle in France, which became his new homeland. The destruction of the culture, from which he originated and the murder of his people, remained the determining forces of his artistic existence. He creates the images and scenes from his fantasy and memory of the lost Eastern European Judaism.

Arthur Kolnik was born in Stanislaviv (today Ivano-Frankovsk), Ukraine in 1890.

Jewish painter and printmaker. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in the studio of Professor Joseph Mehoffer. The artist was mobilized to serve in the army during World War I.

Exhibited in the United States of America in 1921. Upon return Kolnik settled Chernivtsi.

In 1931 the artist moved to Paris. There he worked as illustrator.

Tel Aviv Art Museum organized a major exhibition of works by Kolnik in 1968.

Kolnik died in Paris in 1972.
