PLEASENOTE: IN SOME OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS IN MY LISTINGS YOU MAY SEE SLIGHT\'SHADOWING OR DARKER PATCHES\' AND \'COLOUR INCONSISTENCIES\'. THIS ISDUE TO EITHER AN ABERRATION OF MY CAMERA LENS OR CHANGING LIGHTCONDITIONS AND, UNLESS I MAKE A POINT OF STATING OTHERWISE, YOU CANASSUME THAT IN REALITY THESE DO NOT EXIST.

AnImportant Foreword Regarding Condition & Grading: Previousvisitors to my listings will know that I offer albums which rangefrom \'very good plus\' to \'near mint\' in terms of condition. I don’trestrict my offerings to just near mint, and I don’t just calleverything great or excellent plus regardless of condition.Occasionally a rare album turns up which in some respects grades\'very good plus\' but in other ways is outstanding so providing eachof the features are individually and accurately graded - and I takegreat care with this - I am happy to offer it for sale. However, allvinyl albums I offer are at least highly presentable and deliverenjoyable audio, and most are much better than that. If you areintending to offer please read my comments, observations and individualgradings and check that you are satisfied before placing your offer.

VinylCleaning: I usemachine cleaning only when my ‘ear’ tells me that the audioperformance has deteriorated by exposure over time and will obviouslybe returned closer to the original sound by using this method. If Ithink a vinyl will benefit from this I carry out the procedure withgreat care, but I do not clean vinyls for the sake of it - many Ioffer for sale have had little use and although there can be slightcontamination in the grooves, even when new, that is the originalauthentic sound. My preferred method with little used vinyls is bysoft ‘light touch’ hand brush with natural fine hair gently movedin the direction of the microgrooves. In all methods of cleaning Iuse a mild solution of isopropyl alcohol with a spot of gentledetergent to lubricate and clean the playing surfaces. I am awarethat cleaning can be a controversial subject with vinyl collectors, audio purists and enthusiasts so I will state on each individuallisting if, and how, the vinyl(s) have been cleaned just after the‘Vinyl Visual Grade’.

Specificnotes regarding grading and description: Thefirst section of each listing summarises the album offered, contributors and format followed by the ‘provenance’ in terms ofthe matrix – mother – stamper trail which determines the‘position’ of a record in the pressing process. The dedicatedsections which follow explain why I consider the particular album tobe rare and / or special, accompanied by my comments andobservations, and then deals with the grading of each aspect of itaccompanied by a brief description. My assessment of the appropriategrade for each component is based on RecordCollector ‘Rare Record Price Guide 2016’. Theessential ‘play grade’ and ‘audio performance’ report roundsup the description just prior to the ‘general notes’, which isthe same on all of my listings. Ihope that this layout, including the extensive photo gallery, willprevent buyers from overlooking key points in their evaluation. Please read the following description and take a careful look at thecomprehensive photographs which show the actual item clearly andprovide an informative and accurate representation.

WhenI mention age in my listings it is not an excuse for poor conditionbut as a matter of fact. I do not regard condition as age related, itis primarily dependant on care, and if you ever see somethingdescribed as ‘good for its age’ I recommend you avoid it becausemore often than not it’s an excuse for something that has not beencarefully used.

Ido not use photographs to enhance albums; they are included as an aidto buyers and I always ‘frame’ the shots to highlight any flawsor blemishes – not to bleach out, obscure or avoid them. My photogalleries always feature photos taken from as many angles asreasonably possible, with ‘zoom’ and ‘enlarge’ facilities, because I want visitors to have the best opportunity to examinevisual condition. I always request the maximum photo facility fromthe system but I have noticed that on some occasions, presumablydue to technical glitches, the ‘zoom’ and ‘enlarge’ does notwork. If you ever have any difficulty obtaining satisfactory imagesfrom my listings please contact me via a message to the listing and Iwill send you more photographs as an attachment to my reply.

Rarity/ Observations / Comments:QUITE RARE IN THIS VARIANT AND CONDITION – RELEASED IN THE UKAUGUST 1971 THE ALBUM SOLD FAIRLY WELL TO PEAK AT #18 IN THE UKCHARTS. ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT INCLUDED ON THE ALBUM SALES WERE HELPED BYTHEIR MOST POPULAR SINGLE \'THE DEVIL\'S ANSWER\' WHICH WAS RELEASEDJUST PRIOR TO THE ALBUM PEAKING AT #4 IN THE CHARTS AND DRAWINGATTENTION TO THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM. THERE WERE QUITE A FEW INCIRCULATION BACK IN 1971 BUT YOU DON\'T OFTEN SEE THEM FOR SALE THESEDAYS AND NICE EXAMPLES, LIKE THIS, ARE HARD TO FIND.

CONDITIONIS ALWAYS A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR WHEN ASSESSING RARITY AND THIS ALBUMSCORES HIGHLY IN THAT REGARD. THE VULNERABLE GATEFOLD COVER ISGENERALLY WELL PRESERVED WITH JUST TWO \'BLEMISHES\' OR \'FAULTS\' BEINGTHE ORANGE PRICE STICKER IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER AND THE STAIN ALONGTHE SEAM AT THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER ON THE FRONT GOING OVER TO THEBOTTOM RIGHT CORNER ON THE BACK (ALL FULLY AND CLEARLY VISIBLE IN THEPHOTOGRAPHS). OTHER THAN THOSE TWO MINOR ISSUES THE GATEFOLD IS INEXCELLENT ORDER. THE VINYL HAS A SLIGHT ORIGINAL PRESSING HAZE /BLOOM WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY BENIGN WITH NO AUDIO CONSEQUENCE AND NOOTHER DETRIMENTAL AFFECT. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED CAREFULLY, AND NOT VERYOFTEN, SO IT IS IN SUPERB CONDITION DELIVERING EXCELLENT PLUS AUDIO.A FINE EXAMPLE OF A GREAT ALBUM.

MYGRADING OF THIS ALBUM basedon Record Collector ‘Rare Record Price Guide 2016’ (**n.b. pleasenote that I grade accurately backed up by a description). I neitherover-exaggerate nor under-exaggerate. I see no point in grading anitem with multiple ++++ marks, or under-grading it and then statingthat it should be graded better - I consider these methods to beconfusing. I use the Record Collector system with either \'TOWARDSPLUS\' or a \'FULL PLUS\' to indicate variations above a grade. I havedropped the ‘minus’ indicator in favour of the next full gradedown because I find that many sellers use the ‘minus’ as a methodof implying a higher grade than is strictly deserved and I do notwant to want to be associated with that practice. I always include afull set of super-sized photographs to provide buyers with the bestpossible opportunity to make their own visual assessment of eachalbum in conjunction with my detailed descriptions.

Cover– front surface: VERYGOOD PLUS ~ marked down two grades to allow for the orange pricesticker top right and the slight stain / rub mark bottom left corner, but other than that and very slight age related discolouration it isa highly presentable, tidy front surface – please see photographs.

Cover– back surface: EXCELLENT~ similar to the front but without the sticker so grades a littlehigher, just the small stain bottom right corner, other than that itis clean and tidy – please see photographs.

Cover– corners: NEAREXCELLENT ~ slight rub wear around the tips.

Cover– top seams: EXCELLENT~ very light rub wear at the tips.

Cover– bottom seams: EXCELLENT~ very light rub wear at the tips.

Cover– leading / entry edges: EXCELLENT~ some small indents, a little pick-up - nothing significant.

Cover- centre spread: EXCELLENTPLUS – not very much different from the way it would have been whennew.

Cover– spine: EXCELLENT~ no significant flaws or blemishes, just slight evenly distributeddiscolouration with a few stains / spots and very little light rubwear at the tips of the ends but all text is clean, clear and fullreadable – as you can see.

Cover– overall grade: EXCELLENT~ and a strong excellent too despite the sticker and stain - pleasesee photographs.

VinylVisual side 1 (or A): EXCELLENT TO PLUS ~ andnormally I would grade this a full excellent plus but there is aharmless haze / bloom on the surface caused during the originalpressing process which does not have any detrimental audioconsequence but does slightly affect the appearance and, as this isthe \'visual\' section, I must point it out and take it into account.Otherwise this is a superb looking super-heavyweight vinyl with justsomewispy superficial surface scratches that I associate with movement inand out of the inner sleeve but certainly nothing tangible to mylight fingertip touch and definitely nothing that interferes withplay – please read the play grade below for full details.

VinylVisual side 2 (or B): EXCELLENTTO PLUS ~ and normally I would grade this a full excellent plus butthere is a harmless haze / bloom on the surface caused during theoriginal pressing process which does not have any detrimental audioconsequence but does slightly affect the appearance and, as this isthe \'visual\' section, I must point it out and take it into account.Otherwise this is a superb looking super-heavyweight vinyl with justsomewispy superficial surface scratches that I associate with movement inand out of the inner sleeve but certainly nothing tangible to mylight fingertip touch and definitely nothing that interferes withplay – please read the play grade below for full details.

VinylWarp: nothingsignificant when eye tested on a moving turntable.

VinylWeight: 168grammes (a powerful PEGASUS super heavyweight)

VinylCleaning: By handonly, light touch soft brush, very little required.

LabelVisual side 1 (or A): EXCELLENTPLUS ~ lightspindle trace lines but nothing that spoils the label, please seephotograph.

LabelVisual side 2 (or B): EXCELLENTPLUS ~ light spindle trace lines but nothing that spoils the label, please see photograph.

N.B.Please note that I make no adjustment or allowance in grading forminor marks, slight shrinkage marks, stretch marks / lines on labels, misalignment or marginal print bleed caused in original pressing;these features are quite normal and in my opinion are individualcharacteristics – not defects.

InnerSleeve: VERY GOODPLUS ~ era specific standard plain white / cream paper inner, nonlined and no text, which remains fully intact with no seam splits ordamage, just age related slight discolouration and light creasing(n.b. all records I sell are shipped in a separate new plain whiteinner with removable anti-static liner – the \'empty\' original innersleeve is always included).

Inserts:none

PlayGrade: I considerall aspects of an album\'s condition and grading to be highlyimportant and none more so than the quality of the audio delivery;superior audio performance is, above all, the main reasons forlistening to vinyl. For this reason I have decided to extend my playgrade to rate separately how ‘clearly’ and ‘cleanly’ thesound is received. With vinyl the listener can experience almostperfect ‘clarity’ and reality without the sound being perfectly‘clean’ due to the fact that this is a medium where physicalcontact is unavoidable and the ‘finish’ in the original pressingprocess could vary during the course of a production run. Otherfactors can make very small differences, for example: lack of use,Environment or type of equipment can cause variations in cleanlinessof audio delivery. Therefore, where my cleanliness grade is lower, based on the conditions prevailing at the time I carried out my audiotest - with careful use this is likely to improve.

ANOTE ON AUDIO GRADING: IREGARD PLAY GRADING RECORDS AS A PRIVILEGE RATHER THAN A TASK, BUTEVEN WITH MY EXPERIENCE IT IS SOMETIMES DIFFICULT TO TREAD THE FINELINE THAT WEAVES ITS WAY BETWEEN THE VARIATIONS IN DIFFERENTLISTENERS EXPECTATIONS AND / OR THE EQUIPMENT AND CONDITIONS WHICHPREVAIL IN DIFFERENT EnvironmentS. I SET OUT IN THE ‘GENERAL NOTES’SECTION BELOW THE TYPE OF EQUIPMENT I USE AND, AS I MENTIONED IN THEPREVIOUS PARAGRAPH, I DO FIND THAT LIGHTLY USED UNDAMAGED VINYLSOFTEN IMPROVE SIGNIFICANTLY WITH PLAY. HOWEVER, UNLESS I GRADE ARECORD AS A NEAR MINT ‘DOUBLE’ FOR CLARITY AND CLEANLINESS THEREIS ALWAYS THE CHANCE OF A RANDOM ‘POP’, ‘TICK’ OR LOW LEVELSURFACE SOUND (EVEN WITH NEAR MINT AND NEW RECORDS THERE IS THEPOSSIBILITY OF LIGHT TRANSITIONAL SURFACE SOUND). SO, PLEASE ALWAYSASSUME THAT THERE WILL BE SOME EVIDENCE OF THIS BEING A MEDIUM WHICHRELIES ON PHYSICAL CONTACT AND THEREFORE BY DEFINITION CANNOT BEABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS. CLARITY AND REALITY OF SOUND IS THE REASON THATMOST PEOPLE CHOOSE TO LISTEN TO ANALOGUE RECORDINGS FROM VINYL ANDTHAT IS WHAT I STRIVE TO PROVIDE. EQUALLY, I UNDERSTAND THAT NOBODYENJOYS NASTY SURPRISES SO YOU CAN BE SURE THAT I WILL ALWAYS AIM TOHIGHLIGHT ANY MINOR DEFECTS AND EXPLAIN THEIR AFFECT ON THE AUDIOREPRODUCTION.

ForCLARITYthe audio from this vinyl grades:EXCELLENT PLUS

ForCLEANLINESSthe audio from this vinyl grades:EXCELLENT TO PLUS

AudioPerformance: FULLBODIED, CLEAN AND CLEAR, JUST A LITTLE LIGHT UNDERLYING SURFACE SOUNDFROM THE NON RECORDED SECTIONS AND QUIETER PASSAGES OF PLAY AND ANOCCASIONAL RANDOM / ISOLATED LIGHT TICK BUT THIS IS SENSATIONAL AUDIOWITH NO SIGNIFICANT FAULTS. PLEASE BEAR IN MIND THAT THIS SECTION ANDTHE GRADING IS BASED ENTIRELY ON MY PERSONAL OPINION AND AUDIOPERCEPTION BELONGS TO THE INDIVIDUAL. WITH VINYL CLARITY THERE ISALWAYS LIGHT TRANSITIONAL SURFACE SOUND WHICH IS INEVITABLE FROM THISMEDIUM, EVEN WHEN NEW, AND OCCASIONALLY A LITTLE LIGHT CRACKLE WHICHIS OFTEN STATIC; OR EVEN A RANDOM SOFT TICK – BUT THIS IS IS NOT ARECORD TO BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT, IT HAS BEEN PLAYED CAREFULLY AND NOTVERY OFTEN, AND IS AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT TO LISTEN TO BY ANY MEASURE.

GENERALNOTES

Thankyou for visiting my listing. The section immediately above sets outinformation specific to the particular album / record offered in thislisting. Below are some of my general comments about vinyl which youmay want to browse through if you have time. Please feel free toemail me with any related comments or observations; particularly ifyou have any reliable information which contradicts any of mydescriptions as I am always interested in adding to my knowledge onthis subject. When preparing my listings I use a combination of factsfrom reliable sources, more than forty years of personal experienceand, occasionally, music industry anecdotes.

Justa visual inspection of used vinyls is almost always misleading so Iplay grade every vinyl I offer, before listing, on a LINN SONDEK LP12deck fitted with a LINN KARMA cartridge down-force set at 17.5 mN(1.75 g) and a top quality stylus which I renew at intervalsaccording to manufacturers specification, through a PRO-JECT PhonoBox DS Preamplifier and manufacturers pre-set REGA BRIO amplifierwith sound delivered through FOCAL CHORUS 706 loudspeakers - this isa brilliant and revealing combination enabling me to be informativewith play grading.

Althoughit is extremely rare, there can be a difference between mydescriptions, and opinions, and an individual buyer’s expectationsso I have a clearly stated Returns Policy for added reassurance whichis detailed at the bottom of all my listings. In the unlikely eventthat you want to use this facility please read the details carefullyfirst, and then contact me to agree the procedure. There really willnever be a reason to have any problem with an item you purchase fromme. Before offerding please read my terms and conditions of sale belowwhich are there to inform buyers and prevent any misunderstandings.

FirstIssues, First Pressings & Originals:Pleasenote that when I refer to a First Issue I mean that the evidencesuggests that the album offered is from the first batch that wasissued for commercial release in the country of origin stated in thelisting. Where I state First Press I mean that based on a reasonableinterpretation of the matrices, mothers and stamper codes the vinylcomes from the first, or extended first, production run; thesestatements alone do not always mean that the vinyl is from the veryfirst ’stamper’ ever made. However, where I state First Issue andFirst Press it is likely that the album offered includes one (ormore) of the early vinyl(s) produced in the country of origin fromthe first matrix sets, first or early ‘mother(s)’ and first orearly ‘stamper(s)’. Original means that the record bears thefirst label design for that particular pressing and, in the case ofthe cover, it is from the first cover manufacturer for that pressing;the label and / or cover may have very slight changes, if they weremade within the first production run or, if the album was issued withan ‘in run’ label change or choice of cover designs or colours onfirst release, but in these cases I will try and explain thedifferences. This is not an exact science and anomalies will occurwhere I may make a mistake but I believe this will not happen veryoften - if it does then all of my buyers have the unequivocalreassurance of my Comprehensive Returns Policy.

Mydefinition of a rare vinyl: Generallythere is agreement that to qualify for the description rare thereshould not be too many of the type offered, available on the marketat the time. With my listings that will be the main criterion howeverI will also occasionally claim rarity based on excellence ofcondition, or some other key feature, or an accompanying item such asan insert, which is not often found with similar vinyls.

UKfirstand early pressings: Inmany cases inexperienced sellers claim first pressing status withoutknowledge or evidence in the hope of achieving high prices –experienced buyers will know better and avoid those offers. Of coursewith the more popular huge selling albums, where the record companieswere fairly sure of major sales from the outset, there were manyfirst pressings. Also, in cases where demand was sustained oremerging the first press run was maintained over an extended releaseperiod; in other cases the first press run was specific. Generallythe lower the numbers in the matrices and stamper codes on the vinyl‘run off’ areas, on both sides of a record, the earlier thepressing therefore ‘A1’ & ‘B1’ are most often first orearly pressings, but there are variants and exceptions to the rule. The most notable ones, for example where the ‘1’ matrix was onlyused for test, promo or industry pressings so the commercial releasesstarted at ‘2’ or even higher, and there are a few moreobservations which are worth noting. There are low numbered matriceswhich belong to second and even third pressings (in these cases therecord companies gave similar numbers to the first press of are-issue) you can normally identify these by, examining the labelswhich are often different in texture and/or design, and by checkingthe weight of the record as the earlier pressings were normallyheavier. Sometimes different symbols were used in the matrices; thesemay indicate an earlier pressing, a contract pressing or just simplya change of format. For example some records have A▼1& B▼1others A // 1 & B // 1 others A-1 & B-1 and so on. In thesecases the mother and stamper references can help with establishingthe proximity of an individual record to the original recording –each different record company had their own coding system, some usingletters from words to indicate numbers, others just using numbers.Better known examples include GRAMOPHLTD & BUCKINGHAM – used byEMI and DECCA respectively. Occasionally there are high numbers onfirst pressings, but this is unusual. Other points to note are themanufacturer of the ‘cover’ or ‘outer sleeve’ and variouscharacteristics or design variants. The ‘inner sleeve’ or ‘bag’can also be an indicator. However it is not wise to rely on detailsbeyond the matrices and labels as the covers and sleeves can easilybe interchanged. ‘Made Up’, Swapped’ or ‘Doctored’ sets arenot uncommon, particularly with high value albums which have insertsand special text, so the best advice is to try and make sure thateverything matches the criteria thus eliminating most of the risk (agood look at the photographs on the listing, if they are of theactual item offered as they are on all of my listings, is alwaysadvisable – hopefully the sellers will also include the ‘zoom’and ‘enlarge’ photograph facility which only costs pennies toinclude and it remains a mystery to me as to why many avoid thisservice?). As a general rule I suggest that you don’t pay hundred’sor thousands of pounds unless you are buying from a reliable sourcewho provide you with comprehensive information and have a clearlystated ‘Returns Policy’ - or unless you’ve got money to throwaway (and in that case there are any number of far more deservingcharities).

Audioreproduction on vinyl: Inmy experience there is always an element of surface or backgroundsound with audio reproduction on vinyl, even when new - very hard toimagine how there could not be when two solid surfaces come intocontact with each other and are then amplified! In my opinion anybodywho claims there is no surface sound, or ‘silence’, is hard ofhearing, has not turned the amplifier on, or is using very poorquality audio equipment. Almost all used vinyl has at least lightsurface scratches which are always visible when viewed under a brighthalogen light - which is what I use for inspection. So if you areuncomfortable with a bit of light crackling it’s probably best notto buy vinyl. In my opinion the light surface sound is more thancompensated for by the clarity and ‘reality’ of the overall soundreproduction. I listen carefully to every album I list, beforelisting it for sale.

PleaseNote: All of thecomment contained in this listing is subjective, it is based only onmy opinion and your expectations may not necessarily correspond withmy standards. If you receive an album from me and you have somedifferences please remember to use reasonable communication as afirst option. I have a comprehensive non confrontational ‘ReturnsPolicy’ which is clearly set out below and providing there is noabuse, or use the negative response system, I will always reimburseyou in full for your direct costs if you return the album correctly.
