Description
SIGNED COPY? Book of Fifty Drawings. Aubrey Beardsley. 1st edition 1st issue 1897.Leonard Smithers, London:, 1897. With an iconography by Aymer Vallance. Fifty stunning full-page plates. First edition. First issue. 11.5" x 9" Quarto. Bound in its original red cloth with gilt lettering and design, top edge gilt. Covers are a bit faded, spine darkened, a little rubbed head and tail. Inside, hinges strong, a few grubby marks, very little foxing, very faint, neat erased pencil marks to front end-paper, some page ripples there is a strange fault on about 8 pages, the bottom corner has what looks like a faint embossed stamp which has left a mark and ripples and on a couple has left some tiny holes, (some shown in the last few images), plain paste-down has a mark from a sticker being removed, which has also a tiny bit of paper loss, (also shown) but this is still an extremely rare and highly collectable Aubrey Beardsley First edition. The book was reprinted in 1899 in the same format. This is the true first issue of 1897. THE BEARDSLEY SIGNATURE MOST CERTAINLY HAS SOME AGE, BUT I HAVE NO PROVENACE, BEARDLEY SIGNATURES ARE INCREDIBLY SCARCE.
