Oushak Carpets are Turkish rugs that use a particular family of designs, called by convention after the city of Ushak- one of the largest towns and a major city of rug production from as early as the days of the Ottoman Empire, well into the 20thCentury.
Ushak (Oushak) rugs are some of the finest Oriental rugs, so much so that many of the masterpieces of the 15thand 16thCenturies have been attributed to Oushak. The popular Medallion and Star carpets originated in Oushak.
Oushak rugs are well known for their silky luminous wool and cinnamon, terracotta, gold, blue, green, ivory, grey, and saffron dyes.
In the late 19thcentury, Oriental rug production was rejuvenated. At this time, Oushak re-surfaced as a preeminent center of the weaving industry. The new Oushak industry saw two major shifts in design: floral patterns in the Persian tradition were incorporated into design and room size, and decorative carpets were woven as European standards demanded.
