Ward worked with the new Republican-controlled NJ Legislature to securestate passage of both the Thirteenth and the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S.Constitution, with its Due Process and Equal Protection clauses. Ward\'s activeinterest in the welfare of Civil War veterans and their families continuedduring the years of Reconstruction. His goodwork for veteran Civil War soldiers earned him the moniker, “the Soldier’sFriend.”

BIOGRAPHICALSKETCH OF THE HONORABLE

MARCUSLAWRENCE WARD

Marcus Lawrence Ward (November 9, 1812 –April 25, 1884) was an American Republican Partypolitician, who served as the 21stGovernorof NewJersey from 1866 to 1869, and represented the state inCongress for one term, from 1873 to 1875.

During the Civil War he established Marcus L. Ward\'s Office for Soldier\'sBusiness - a private bureau which secured soldier\'s pay and transmitted it totheir families. He also founded the Ward U.S. Military Hospital inNewark, a forerunner of the Soldier\'s Home, and was chairman of the Public AidCommittee of Newark. Ward\'s active interest in the welfare of Civil Warveterans and their families continued during the years of Reconstruction. His good work for veteran Civil War soldiersearned him the moniker, “the Soldier’s Friend.”

Republicans nominated Ward for Governor in 1862, but he lost to Democrat JoelParker. Ward was nominated again in 1865 and was elected Governor of New Jersey,serving from 1866 to 1869. After a Democratic-controlled legislature had notpassed the ThirteenthAmendment, Ward worked with the new Republican-controlled New Jersey Legislatureto secure state passage of both the Thirteenth and the FourteenthAmendment, with its DueProcess and Equal Protectionclauses. Ward was chosen as a delegate to the 1860 Republican NationalConvention and was the chairman of the Republican National Committeefrom 1866 to 1868.

Ward served a single term in the United States House ofRepresentatives from the newly created New Jersey\'s 6thcongressional district, from 1873-1875.

He died in Newark, New Jersey,and was buried there in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

There is a memorial plaque dedicated to him in the Alice Ransom DreyfussMemorial Garden behind the Newark Museum.
