AliceNamatjara grew up in a remote area of WesternAustralia, on the edge of the Great Sandy desert, west of Kintore. Herpaintings are bold, textured, earthy, coarse even; inspired by the landscape ofthis area and its deep red-ochre sands.

Her soulful creations are sincere, thepaint often applied straight onto the canvas with her fingers as did herancestors long ago straight onto the sand. Using mostly ochre tones, herpaintings rarely hold more than 2 or 3 colours at once. Now in her 70s, Alicesuffers arthritis which also impacts on her strokes.
