UNBELIEVABLE PIECE OF EARLY AMERICAN IRON HEARTHWARE
!!!NOT!!!This is a reproduction. It was hand forged in Indonesia or China by a talented guy who worked from a template provided by unknown sources (possibly Dutch). The maker used chemical oxidizing agents to induce the \"grungy patina.\" Note the details of construction: the candle cup; feet attachment; and especially the spring hasp device used to adjust the candle arm to the shaft. These sorts of fake ironwares are everywhere. The most common forms include two arm table candlestands with penny feet; similarly crafted floor standing models; punched tin coffeepots; wedding band hogscrapers (especially tall ones in pairs; tin sconces (especially those with mirrors and in pairs); saw tooth trammel lighting devices; iron chandeliers with conical candle cups; spiral candlesticks; rushlights; betty lamp hangers with scrollwork backs; skewer sets with scrolled wall hanger hooks; tin Ipswitch betty lamps. Holy moly..... I could go on and on and on.Back in the early 1980s we witnessed a midwest importer in Nashville uncrate barrels filled with this stuff-- all neatly wrapped in Oriental newspaper. He never sold them as \"real\" perse. However, we watched dealers snatch these things up with evil intent. These days there are virtual supermarkets for such things. If you carouse the internet you can find a warehouse imports place in New York. Years ago we acquired one of their catalogs. These folks know what they are selling and they do not misrepresent their wares. For your edification a few pictures from this catalog are posted herein. Sometimes dealers innocently acquire and sell these things as old. It\'s easy to to be fooled. These things can look really good even to the experienced eye. The harder you look at them the better they get. People are duped at sales or by unscrupulous dealers. However, there are other examples of dealers who knowingly buy this stuff, fabricate elaborate fictitious stories, fake provenances, and then pander them to unsuspecting collectors using ridiculous two dollar haut monde adjectives such as the nonsense verbiage that led you to this ad.They are the very dregs of the antiques world-- those who knowingly choose to traffic in fake stuff in full cognizance of the fact and reality of what they are selling. They know they are liars and cheaters. But they do it anyway. All for a little bit of money.Sobeit. Instead I will refer you a 1993 book by Norman S Young.
