Adjustable 1920s Peach Flapper Dress With Art Deco Milkglass Beading Sz 6-12

Description

An all original 1920s flapper dress in peach silk-linen blend with large milkglass beads applied in a classic art deco geometric pattern. This fabric blend is much more durable than silk alone - with the latter dresses usually suffering from age related deterioration. This sweet beaded flapper dress has drop short T sleeves, a rounded neckline front and back accentuated with white beaded triangles, and has ties on each hip which can adjust the sizing of the dress. The beading makes the dress look like it has a drop waist, but it is a straight tabbard design and this is just an optical illusion brought about by the pattern of the beading. There is a large medallion on the front left hip, and two smaller ones on the lower skirt, front and back. The beading goes from triangles around the neckline, to long lines flowing down the bodice to the \"drop waist\" punctuated with a large medallion at the right hip, to the lower skirt which is separated by more triangles and horizontal lines of beading and where the beading thereafter is much more extensive, including medallions front and back, down to the hem. The dress is ever so slightly semi-sheer, and so it could be worn with only minimal undergarments, with a period style teddy, or with a slip. The measurements (approximate) are:

  • bust (pit to pit) 44\"
  • natural waist 44\"
  • natural hips 44\" with ties on each side capable of reducing each side by up to 7\"
  • shoulder to hem 42\"

Now for the great news! The measurements of this dress are approximately equivalent to a US size 14, and will fit up to this size without pulling in the side panels. The dress is displayed on my size 6 model with the side panels pulled in fully, and it still fits nicely. So this adjustable dress is capable of fitting anyone from a size 6 to a size 14. The fabric is slightly stretchy, but I would not recommend larger than a size 14 or maybe even only up to a size 12 as the flapper look is loose. There are no major condition issues with the dress. However, this dress is at least 90 years old, and so there are bound to be some minor signs of age related wear in a garment this old, including:

  • there is a faint blue mark on the right back shoulder (shown)
  • there is very faint discoloration under one arm only (left, shown - although it is hard to see)
  • there is a tiny organic brown stain on the front left sleeve (shown)
  • there is some minor bead loss - this issue is more prominent only because of the exacting geometric pattern which shows even minor bead loss. Milkglass beads are available on line and the beads are quite large so restoration would be relatively easy
  • there are a few tiny pinholes and other tiny organic spots (one area with a group shown, although a couple of other just occur singly)
  • some loose threads and beads
  • there may be some other minor signs of age related wear like loose threads, seams or tiny picks, but I did not notice any

The durable silk-linen blend fabric is strong, silky and shows no signs of deterioration as are often seen in similar beaded dresses made of pure silk. The beads are heavy, but the dress does not show stress from the weight of the beads. The dress is clean and freshly laundered. Hat and necklace sold separately. Ready to wear to your art deco or flapper evening as is with just s bit of securing of loose threads so no more bead loss occurs. Certainly a beautiful piece and well worth the effort of restoration of the beading! This is NOT a reproduction, this is an original 1920s peach flapper dress with milkglass beading in a classic art deco design. Hat and any pictured accessories sold separately.

If you are looking for new and perfect, then vintage is probably not for you. In many cases, vintage clothing has been worn and is no longer new, and that is why it is such a good bargain. Excellent antique or vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect new or perfect as there will almost always be some signs of wear, especially with older items. Sometimes we sell newer vintage items that are new old stock (NOS) so they have never been worn and can be in such excellent condition that there are no signs of wear. But some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored all those years. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item. Nevertheless, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks!
