The Songye now reside in the south of the Republic of Congo.

Kifwebe means mask in the Songye language, so, this Kifwebe has the typical linear carved detail and square mouth found on this style of mask.

Masks such as this would be worn for dancing during ceremonies and celebrations.

Female masks have no crest and exude beauty, tranquility and inner peace. These masks are not aggressive in their appearance or in their behaviour.

This is a well worn Songye mask, circa mid to early 20th century.

Afemale mask, as it has a plain coiffure, whereas a male mask has a central crest.

There arevegetable fibre repairs and old redundant wormholes.

Thisis a solid mask, with good natural wear and patina.
