A superb karan wemba mask.
The wonderful piece is a fine example of the classic karan wemba mask.Starting from the bottom,this piece features the oval face mask with triangular eyes and an imprinted geometric design. This designcontinues up the plank and along the tall symbolic antelope horns. Between the horns, stands a proud female figure with long arms, a swollen navel and pointed breasts.
The karan wemba reflect a woman\'s power both political and spiritual. Used to honor women who have attainedthe status of completing the role of wife and motherhood, theses masks were worn during funeral dances.

Damage: Few chips and nicks visible in pictures but extremely well cared for considering the age. The left horn is slightly loose where it attaches to the base, and the tip has broken off. Bothimperfections are highlighted in the pictures Enjoyed as part of a private collection.
