On offer here in an exclusive format, a rare Egyptian  relief inlay featuring the profile of Pharaoh Akhenaten.

This type of carving was made to be inserted into a hollow recess in a wall as part of a larger composition. This technique was very popular during the reign of Akhenaten and Nefertiti and it is somewhat like an elaborate jigsaw puzzle made of different coloured stones individually carved to create the whole image.

The crown would have been made of coloured blue glass or lapis and placed above this flesh coloured fragment on a wall scene. This technique remained popular well into the following 19th dynasty and they are often well preserved.

The image of the king has soft features which suggests it was created mid-reign as the harsh early representations were replaced with a more restrained style.

Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone it has a well developed aged ochre patina and is mounted on a stand to give a striking effect.
