Alexander Hamilton, an impoverished immigrant from the West Indies, rose to become a framer of the U.S. Constitution and the architect of America’s political economy. Aaron Burr served with distinction in the Revolutionary War and was Vice President of the United States (1801 – 1805). This duel was an honor match that changed the course of American history. When Burr and Hamilton met on the dueling grounds of Weehawken, New Jersey, Burr shot Hamilton, who fired into the air either as a reflex after being shot, or purposely to avoid shooting Burr. Burr was indicted for murder in New York State, but never prosecuted. Many say that Burr would have been the next President of the United States if it were not for this duel.
