Alice Nikitina, vintage 8 ¼ by 10 ¼ inch black andwhite photograph of the Russian ballet dancer on double weight paper, signedand dated October 1927 in the lower right, in near excellent condition (thephoto has been taken out of a scrapbook and there is residual glue and paper onthe back that covers the photographer\'s stamp). Nikitina was a principalballerina with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes at this time.

AliceNikitina (1900 – 1978) was a dancer, teacher, and singer. She trained at the Imperial Ballet Schoolwith Preobrajenska but never graduated as she left Russia after the Revolutionin October. She made her debut in Yugoslavia in 1920 then went on to performwith Boris Romanov\'s Romantic Ballet in Berlin. In 1923 she joined Diaghilev\'sBallet Russes and became a ballerina. She created roles in Massine\'s \'Zephyr etFlore\' and Balanchine\'s \'Apollon Musagete\'. After Diaghilev died she performedwith Anatole Vilzak in Brussels and Paris and appeared in London Cochranrevues. In 1933 she performed with Ballets Serge Lifar in London amd with DeBasil\'s Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo at Covent Garden in 1937. After retiringfrom dancing she turned to singing and began a new career in Italy. Eleven yearslater she opened her own ballet school in Paris.
