This genre painting depicts horse traders, showing a man seated on a cream toned horse with a long pipe as the central focal point. Around him, a marketplace unfolds complete with other shoppers, horses, and stands. The piece overall is rendered in warm tones with many browns, creams, and reds. There is some damage to the frame that can be noted in the photographs, specifically some severe chipping of the gold-painted plaster inlay and outer corners. There is also some splitting in the board, with the longest visible crack measuring 7\" from the left upper corner reaching 32.5\" across the painting. Another measures 15\" from the top left, 9\" into the piece; another measures 5.5\" from the upper right stretrching 6.5\" into painting; and another measures 19\" from the upper right, 14\" across the painting. All these splits appear to have been treated and fixed at some point during the life of the painting.

This painting is accompanied by a photocopy of a letter from Henry Rood Art Restoring Service, in Greensboro NC, which reads:

      \"To whom it may concern:

I have completed restoring a genre painting (Horse Traders) signed lower left corner, A. Fisher, Pinxit, for Harry Adams, Inc. here in Greensboro, N.C. It is painted in oil colors on a wooden panel 34\' x 26\'.

I believe his painting to be an original one executed by Alvan Fisher (1792-1863). From the enclosed biographical sketch found on page 228 of the New York Historical Society\'s \'Dictionary of Artists in America--1564-1860\" by G. C. Groce and D. H. Wallace, this artist painted genre and animal pictures.

He was an honorary member of the National Academy and his work is represented in the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C.

      Respectfully submitted,

      Henry Rood, Jr.

      Oct. 10, 1980.\"

Alvan Fisher was one of the earliest American landscape and genre painters, and the first who took a tour of Europe to heighten his artistic education in 1825. He worked primarily out of Dedham, Massachusetts. As a young artist, he was one of the first landscape painters to hang a professional studio sign in Boston. He travelled the country seeking out beautiful landscapes, and produced a series of paintings focused on Harvard College for reproduction as engravings to be issued to the public. Some of these Harvard paintings were later adapted for use on Staffordshire earthenware. In 1934, his work was displayed at Harding\'s Gallery alongside contemporary peers such as Thomas Doughty, Chester Harding, and Francis Alexander. Perhaps the greatest recognition of Fisher\'s work came 100 years after his death, when First Lady Jackie Kennedy chose his painting \"The Remnant of the Tribe\" to hang in the Green Room of the White House. Fisher\'s work is extensively catalogued by the Dedham Historical Society, and his works appear as a part of the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, Rhode Island Historical Society, and Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute.

This piece would benefit greatly from another trip to a restorationist, where the splits in the board can be properly treated, the frame can be repaired, and the painting can be cleaned. With its 1980 evaluation as an authentic antique piece almost 200 years old, this piece is a diamond in the rough. Properly restored, this antique would look lovely surrounded by classic or antique decor. Thank you for your interest in this unique antique, if you have any questions please contact us.
