L\'ATELIER SALONThe present mantel clock was built in France in the late 19th century and is signed ‘Planchon’. It features a Vicenti brass movement which still bears the original pendulum. The running duration amounts to 8 days and the half-hour strike is executed. The cambered enamel clock face has gilded open worked brass hands. The clock face is covered by a brass lunette with cambered glass. The clock’s casing is made of Sèvres porcelain in shape of a fluted stump of a column. The fluting is accentuated with a sky blue glaze and golden edges. Besides, the casing is decorated with gilded bronze festoons. The clock is flanked by a Venus sculpture on the left, holding an oval relief medallion in the left hand. On the right side a small putto is accompanied by his playful dog. The pendulum clock and the figurative parts of the decoration are presented on a massive marble base which is richly decorated with relief garlands and fine bead moldings. The design of the present model is based on a prominent example by Charles Dutertre (1715-1793) which is now presented in the ‘Petits Appartements de la Reine’ in the Versailles palace; this clock however lacks in the oval relief medallion. The pendulum clock is in good condition considering its age. The movement is verso signed and numbered ‘PLANCHON. 821’ as well as stamped ‘97. Vicenti. Medaille d’argent. 1888‘. The pendulum also bears the number ‘821’. The porcelain casing is marked inside with a blue overglaze mark and a ‘B’ which corresponds with the Sèvres mark from 1754. Furthermore, there is a small golden star right next to it. The left arm of the Venus sculpture is screwed and the relief medallion is signed ‘A Caron’. The clock measures 44.5 cm in height, 31.5 cm in width and 17 cm in depth.
