This is an American Aesthetic Movement Cast Iron Fireplace Mantel circa 1885 with embossed hand painted polychromed art panels. This is the \"rarest of the rare\" cast iron mantle and I challenge you to find another. I have spent an exhaustive amount of time trying to determine the history of this piece, a photo of another or any kind of information. I believe this to have been a special order piece.

HISTORY: We purchased this piece in Covington Kentucky from a private homeowner who had done some \'remodeling\' and had removed this mantle from a formal living room to install \"media bookcases\". The home was a circa 1885 Italianate Townhouse. Architecturally very nice, but it is my belief that this mantle was acquired, and installed at some point in the homes history, as the mantle in the dining room was a more typical cast iron piece I would expect to find in a house like this. I have done an exhaustive search of \"mansion history\" in the Covington /Newport area and have not found any photographic references of a house this may have came from nor have I found any \'catalog references\" of this \'style\' mantel being offered by local companies of the era that sold mantles. It is more likely this is an east coast piece that was special ordered by someone.

RESTORATION AND CONDITION: The mantle itself a heavy cast iron and is assembled in several section with the \"decorative panel section\" as a one piece. This is similar in design (except for these panels ) to other Renaissance Revival mantles. The panel section appears to be by a \"built up\" method rather than the embossed method as the back panels on the back are smooth. We used a well known decorative artist to do a paint analysis and painting and the colors were chosen to recreate what we believe the original polychoming looked like. We were advised to not strip or sandblast the piece to take it to bare metal, so there are normal imperfections you would expect with age. No attempt was made to \'over restore\' this piece and make it look new. The top of the mantle is a SLATE piece (painted black) measuring 12\" x 49\" and is 1 1/2\" thick. We cannot determine if this was original to the piece but historical evidence would suggest this probably has a cast iron top. There is no summer cover but the opening is 19 1/2\" x 20 3/4\". It could have been a coal or gas insert unit or just a summer cover. We do not know which. The mantel projects out from the wall 8 inches and is 48 1/2\" wide.

SHIPPING: We are not offering shipping on this piece. It is VERY HEAVY cast iron piece and the slate slab Top (75 lbs) is also heavy. You should plan on using a blanket shipper, like TCS, and I would estimate the weight at 250 lbs for mantel and top.
