New England - Vermont Impressionist landscape by well-known American artist,
Cecil Vezin Grant (1880 - 1953 ).

Oil on canvas board.

Signed by the artist, lower right, \"C.V. Grant\".

Circa 1935 - 1940\'s.

Mounted in an older, gold-painted, wide wood frame. SIZE:

Painting - 11\" x 14\" / Frame - 18\" x 21\" A very finely painted view into a Vermont forest in winter, with snow on the ground. This painting can make you feel the cold and although painted in a Tonalist manner, is actually full of the colors found in a New England forest during the winter months.

The work features an attractive and thought-out composition that draws the eye deep into the forest. The brushwork is quite beautiful and flowing, in the post-impressionist style that was popular with American artists during the first half of the 20th century. The artist used a thick application of paint over most of the painting to good effect, creating a dimensional quality and a work that can be studied in detail and does not tire the eye.

This painting is in good condition as shown in the photographs. There is no damage or restoration and although the painting could use a light cleaning, it displays nicely just as it is now.

The frame shows wear to the gilded and painted surfaces and could use a touch-up here and there, but displays the painting nicely.Cecil Vezin Grant
(1880 - 1953 )

Cecil Vezin Grant was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on July 20, 1880. He was educated at the Pingrey School in Elizabeth, NJ and after his marriage to Mary R. Jack they relocated to Elizabeth NJ where their only child, Lois, was born in 1914.

Grant was a stockbroker, commuting to Wall Street in New York City each day. On weekends he was a \"hobby painter\", and traveled to the New Jersey shore, Gloucester, Massachusetts, and in the mid 1920s to southern Vermont. In the late 1920s he purchased an old farmhouse in Londonderry, Vermont.

The farmhouse was intended to be summer vacation home, but the Wall Street crash of October 1929 changed all that: Cecil Grant lost his job, his life savings and even his home in Elizabeth, NJ. He moved his family to the Vermont farmhouse, struggled to make ends meet with odd jobs, and continued his painting just to keep occupied.

But in the depths of the Great Depression, Grant began to win prizes for some of his paintings exhibited locally. From then until his death in March 1953 he painted many landscapes of Vermont, in oils, and virtually all of scenes within a 30 mile radius of his Vermont home. He painted during all of the seasons, and in the summers he had what amounted to a one-man show on the village green in Manchester, Vermont.

In later years he also operated the Manchester Art Gallery in what is now the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester Center. Cecil Vezin Grant died in 1953 and was buried in New Jersey.
