American RevWar period horseman\'s saber & scabbard, surcharged to So. Carolina

Offered is an original American Revolutionary War period horseman\'s saber & scabbard, surcharged to South Carolina.  The sword is very close in appearance (down to the missing scabbard rings) to the one listed in the book \"Sword and Firearm Collection: The Society of the Cincinnati,\" page 16, plate SW, and identified to Colonel John Green, 1830-1793.  See last three photos for excerpts from the book.  This saber has a 32 1/2 inch blade, mostly in an uncleaned, brown appearance.  It has an unsharpened edge, with very minor nicks, mostly out towards the tip - nothing that materially detracts.  No rust and very minor, scattered areas of pinprick pitting.  Saber has a substantial blade, taping to approximately 1 1/2 inches wide at the ricasso, and maintaining its width to the curvature of the tip.  The flat spine tapes to 3/8-inch at the guard, with the letters \"SC\" stamped as shown - which I believe to show ownership by the state of South Carolina.  There are no maker marks, stampings, hallmarks, etc anywhere on this set.  Blade is set tight in the grip.  Grip, backstrap, guard, and ferrule ring are all tight.  Grip has a leather wrap that may have been replaced a long time ago.  Saber comes with the scabbard as shown, into which it fits well with no looseness or rattle.  A remarkably well preserved set, and one that\'s VERY close in appearance and size to an attributed, Revolutionary War piece.  Note that the book is for reference only; it is not part of the sale.
