AMERICAN STERLING SILVER CHILD\'S BOWL AND PLATE SET
MADE BY WILLIAM B. KERR 1890-1906
WilliamKerr company (org. 1855 NewarK NJ) was a maker of Art Nouveaujewelry,and sterling silver goods, includingthe American Beauty series. Kerr was alsoknown for its children\'s Christening and gift wares in different patterns of flatware and holloware featuring Nursery Rhymes,and other images.
KERR WAS KNOWN FOR THEIR ACID- ETCHING PATTERNS. THEY WERE EXTREMELY INTRICATE BUT ALSO VERY TIME CONSUMING, AND LABORIOUS, AS ACID WAS USED TO SLOWLY REMOVE LAYERS OF SILVER TO REVEAL DEPTH AND CLARITY OF DESIGN
This set is different and unique, and not oftenseen or available, as the pattern theme is Storybook Birds, rather than the more common Alphabet, or variations of NurseryRhyme series.
The bowl is 4 1/2 inches wide and 2 1/4 inches tall weighing 146 grams (5oz) Of circular shape and with a sloped and taperd lip. Standing on a 3 1/4 inches wide raised edge foot. The acid etching is in excellent condition, with clear and crisp definitionin all 5 storybook bird scenes with names. There is a unused blank cartouche. The owners name \"Mary Lea Johnson\" is engraved on the underneath of the bowl. Clearly stamped with the makers marks of a Axe with three X\'s on the handle (this mark used after 1892) Stamped Sterling and a pattern number of 5529.
The Under Plate is 6 1/2 inches wide with a raised edge lip, and curved recessed center inset for the bowl to sit. The plate weighs 135 grams (4.7oz) There are 7 scenes of birds with their storybook names The plate also bears a blank cartouche.The owners name \"Mary Lea Johnson\" is engraved in the center of the bowl. The bottom of the plate bears the exact same hallmarks, sterling, and pattern number as the bowl.WM.B. KERR & CO - Newark, NJ
