Ames Militia Staff Officers Sword Circa 1840-1860.
Grip is 6 inches long. Pommel is helmet shaped. Bud shaped cross quillions with slender langets and ears decorated with floral designs and 5 pointed star. All metal parts are gilded brass. Grips are bone and line carved. Grip is cracked on both sides with old glue repair in cracks making grip solid again. 95% of gilding remaining.
Blade is 34 1/4 inches long being 1 inch wide at handletaperingto a point. Diamond shaped with a small central fuller measuring 13 inches long. Blade is etched on both sides with sprays, acorns. leaves, an eagle as well as other adornments. Etched inpanelunder one langet : AMES Manufacturing Co. Chicopee, Mass in three lines. Condition of blade is bright etchedpanelsare extremely clear and sharp. Some spots are minor staining but overall in excellent condition.
Scabbard is 32 inches long with two suspension rings at top and one at middle. Engraved nicely with leaves and bands showing. 95% bright gilding present. Some minor dents but overall a great complement to the rest of thisbeautifulsword.
