(syn. Crinum baumii)

Exquisite Desert Spider Lily

Extremely hard to find!

This highly desirable flowering bulb is native to parts of Angola, Namibia and South Africa. It was first described as a Crinum species but is now an Ammocharis. This very rewarding species is so compact that it can fit in virtually any growing Environment that has ample sun and warmth. Despite being described 108 years ago this species is still extremely rare in cultivation. The bulbs take 6+ years to reach blooming size from seed. I have never seen bulbs of this species offered for sale before in the US. It is virtually impossible to purchase this bulb as it is not grown commercially. Usually very little pollen is produced and they are very shy to set seed via sibling- or out-crossing (self-pollination is not possible) and even when pollination is successful, only 1-2 seeds are produced, thus making this always extremely scarce.

Ammocharis baumii leaves are very thin and narrow, however its flowers are disproportionately quite large! They open white on the first evening at dusk and by the second evening are dark pink. The narrow, spidery, elongated petals reflex like an elegant umbrella. Different clones exhibit varying flower shapes, some have open shapes, others have curly segments, some have entire margins while others are undulate.

This rare gem is surprisingly easy to grow. It has evolved to tolerate extreme heat in summer, low humidity, harsh sunlight, strong wind and extended periods of drought. In habitat it remains dormant during the cool, dry winters. Leaves emerge in late spring when rains arrive. In good years mature bulbs can bloom 2-3 times between spring and summer.

In cultivation it is adaptable and it can be grown easily outdoors in tropical, subtropical and frost-free Mediterranean-type climates. This species is also an excellent candidate for growing outdoors in the summer time in temperate climates that have very warm summers (most of the US East Coast, South and Midwest). It also makes a splendid miniature pot plant for a patio, greenhouse, or as a houseplant on windowsill or under lights. It is an excellent companion plant to grow with xeric plants.

To produce good blooms each year, Ammocharis baumii requires a dry rest in winter, contrasted by a warm summer with regular waterings. In spring give it the full force of full sun and water it intermittently to wake it from its slumber. During summer watering, allowing the potting medium to dry out almost completely between waterings, however if grown in pure pumice it can withstand high amounts of rainfall/more frequent waterings when the weather is warm. In autumn reduce water until it has gone dormant. During winter the bulb should remain dry. As with all Amaryllis relatives, Ammocharis roots are perennial. The longer your bulb has been growing in its pot without its roots disturbed the better it will bloom!

I grow my bulbs in a 90% horticultural pumice medium. You can add more organic mix if you water less often or in an arid area. Outdoors give the hottest, brightest sunshine possible. If growing indoors, a south-facing window will suffice.

Ammocharis baumii never makes pups from the base. It remains a single bulb for its entire life span and therefore can only be propagated from seed. Its bulbs are extremely long-lived.

The bulb will be shipped bare-root as the potting mix in which it\'s currently growing is quite heavy.

This is an extremely rare species and this is the only bulb I will sell of the species for at least 2 years.

Don\'t miss out on this exceptional opportunity!

Please read before offerding:

I propagate and sell high-quality, rare plants from my collection, most of which are very hard to find anywhere. I\'m passionate about propagating and distributing rare flora. You can offer with confidence knowing that you will be shipped healthy material as I maintain high standards of hygiene and nutrition for my plants. All plants are grown in soil-less media on raised benches or in controlled growing Environments with the aim to ensure plants are free of pests and/or pathogens. My collection is built up from years of searching, trading and careful purchasing from ethical sources both domestic and international. My motivations for selling plants on are twofold: firstly to expand the range of special and beautiful plants available to interested gardeners and horticulturists both for their enjoyment and to help ensure these species\' survival ex situ by increasing their numbers and availability; secondly it’s to help support my efforts in the propagation of these rare species as all the money from your purchases go directly to paying my substantial greenhouse utility bills, propagation supplies as well as to help me acquire new plant material.

I put care and time into writing each description for plant sales; I attempt to cover all relevant information necessary for your success in growing each species in your home, garden or greenhouse. I recommend saving a copy of the cultural advice in the listing for future reference. Included with each sale listing are pictures of the plant you will receive indicated by the phrase \"You are offerding on ___ shown above in pictures #_ above\", usually with a finger, ruler or other indicator of real-life scale so that you know what to expect; please be sure to read the listing.

I only use photos in my listings that I have permission to use. When I don\'t have access to or permission for photos, I try to provide links to internet search results to help you find relevant images. is rife with unethical plant sellers who brazenly steal photos in order to sell their seeds and plants without permission or compensation to the photographers (sales with photos are much more successful than those without photos). This is wrong on so many levels and their illegal behaviour reflects poorly on such sellers and casts considerable doubt on the veracity and true identity of the plant material they purport to sell. Sadly, every week I find my photos and those of other photographer friends being used on illegally. I contact regularly and they remove these copyright infringements via their VeRO programme. It is my hope that if enough customers report and boycott the unethical sellers, we can make a safer and fairer place. You deserve to buy plant material that is true to its advertised identity, not grow something for a number years only to find that when it blooms it was not what you paid good money for!

response: My priority is on providing you with special, healthy plants in a timely fashion, and I have found that giving and chasing down response distracts from this objective. If you are happy with your experience I certainly appreciate positive response. If you are for some reason unhappy with your experience, please contact me before leaving your response, otherwise you\'re not giving your seller an opportunity to remedy the issue.

Shipping:

These days I ship most plants via USPS Priority Mail and seeds via 1st Class). The shipping charges may seem higher than average but this is because most sellers do not charge the true cost of shipping. The shipping you pay includes the cost of the packing materials and my time: preparation of plants for shipping, packing, driving to and queuing to ship at post office. I do everything myself so that it is executed to the highest standard. The shipping cost also reflects recent price increases by USPS and \'s new policy of taking a significant cut of the shipping you pay for themselves. I pack your purchases carefully and in the way I would like to receive a plant if I were a customer. Delivery confirmation is now included in the shipping cost, however tracking and/or insurance are not included but are available upon request made before or at the time of payment. I can also offer shipping via other USPS services such as First Class mail or Express Mail. FedEx overnight or 2-day shipping are more expensive options. For information on international shipping, please read more below.

The vast majority of my offerings can be combined for significant savings on cost. Depending on size, any additional plants will only add $2-3 per plant to the initial shipping cost of the 1st plant you purchase. Combining multiple items is a great way to save on shipping.

Recent changes to the inputs for international shipping have mangled the shipping costs for international customers. If you are an international customer and the shipping charges seem too expensive; it\'s likely that they are inaccurate. Please contact me and I will provide you with shipping cost quotes ahead of time if you have any concerns. After purchasing an item, please wait for me to send you an invoice before paying so that you will get the correct and most affordable shipping option. Please read the notes below on international shipping.

Because I am a hobby grower, with other work commitments outside of , I only get to the post office just once a week to ship. 99% of the time I ship on Mondays (the day following end of sales, though rarely on Tuesdays). In special cases I may be able to ship on other days of the week, but only if agreed upon ahead of time.

The winning buyer of the sale is responsible for checking on weather forecasts and how they may adversely affect the shipment of plants. I am located in mild climate that facilitates safe shipping year-round. If extreme weather (below 32°F or above 95°F) is occurring in your area and/or the area that lie between my location and that of your shipping address, you may wish to request that I hold your purchase until better weather or have them shipped faster than for what Priority Mail allows. If requested at or before the time of payment, I am willing to hold on to purchases until weather improves. Another option is upgrading to shipping via Express Mail. For shipping during cold spells (below 32°F in the day time) I can include single or multiple 72 hour heat packs at $6 each (if paid with plant invoice, $7 if paid separately). Heat packs add weight and bulk to packages and take longer to pack properly and this is reflected in the cost. If weather is extremely cold, heat packs may not be effective. To ensure that your plant purchase isn\'t harmed by cold or hot weather, be sure to make arrangements at your receiving address so that the package doesn\'t remain outside in a hot or cold location after delivery. I cannot replace plants that are damaged by extreme cold or heat in transit, so during extreme weather it is important to thoroughly consider your options for shipping.

Payment:

I set up my 7-day sales to begin and end on Sunday evenings around between 4-6pm (16:00-18:00) Pacific Standard Time. Of course in order for me to ship on the next day (Monday: see above), payment must be received within 12 hours of the sale\'s end. sales paid for later than this will be shipped on the following Monday. sales must be paid for 72 hours after their end or else the sale will automatically be cancelled and the item re-listed. If there are any issues with paying please contact me via . I am good about communicating; I care a great deal about you being happy with your purchase and for your transaction to run smoothly. Conversely, users who abuse goodwill by winning sales but never paying without any attempts at communicating will be blocked and reported to .

Attention international buyers, and buyers from Hawai\'i, Puerto Rico and other US territories:

It is the responsibility of buyers with local regulations on movement of plant material to understand and comply with import restrictions that may exist and inform me of any relevant packing and shipping instructions. I do not wish to discourage international buyers, but it is essential that such buyers understand the risk involved before offerding. I am versed in plants which pose risk of invasiveness in certain regions (e.g. I will not sell or ship genera such as Bomarea spp., Fuchsia spp., Echium spp., Passiflora spp., any Melastomataceae, etcetera to Hawai\'i). I know what it is like to want a species that is difficult to obtain in one\'s own region and I will do my best to help you. I will pack your plants with the utmost care and while it is rare that plants die in transit, I cannot guarantee their viability because of factors beyond my control. In all cases, I recommend that such buyers contact me before placing offers. I will not replace or refund purchases of plants that have been lost/confiscated or which perish in transit; by offerding you agree to accept responsibility for this risk.

International buyers, please allow me to send you an invoice before paying so that shipping details can be sorted out, including the important matter of deciding which shipping service is most prudent:

Depending on the country you are located in and the plants you purchase, international shipping can be carried out via:

- International First Class Mail (most reasonably priced option, ~10-30 days, no tracking, best for bulbs, seeds and hardiest of plants)

- International Priority Mail (moderately expensive, ~8-16 days, no tracking)

- International Express Mail (expensive, 3-8 days, tracking included, best for most fragile/perishable plants)

Please note that USPS does not provide tracking for International First Class Mail or International Priority Mail.

No shipping to Russia, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, I\'m sorry.

Return policy: I sell perishable goods and as such cannot accept returns.
