Indo-Persian, QajarDynasty-dating from the 18th / early 19th century.
Of sarcophagus form, hand constructed from papier-mâché - this example of scarce form.
The tapering box is internally fitted - a centrally divided rectangular tray locates above a recessed platform. Two smaller rectangular compartments are incorporated at one extreme - the intricate decoration corresponding to that of the tray, (detailed above). With the tray removed, access is gained to the green pigment finished base compartment, (access through a smaller central rectangular aperture - see images 8 & 9). This largely concealed compartment extends the full length of the base.
A recessed rectangular lip to the base opening locates the outer cover in place, creating a flush appearance on closure. The inside of the outer cover is finished with interacted floral decoration - polychrome and gilt.
Externally, the surface shows signs are wear and fading, with some cracking to the cover etc - consistent with age and extensive usage. The interior of this example more than compensates for the exterior !Size: length - 12 1/4\" (311mm), height - 3 1/4\" (83mm), depth - 3 7/8\" (98mm).

Condition - Fair - Good. As described - consistent with genuine age and usage. No repairs. Fine natural colour and patina.
